Getting to Know Their “Dear Neighbor”, Griffins Give Back

Philadelphia, Pa. – (9/26/2012) – Taking initiative and fulfilling the College's “Dear Neighbor” motto, several Griffins participated in the Chestnut Hill College Griffins Give Back campaign which was recently put into practice by the Student Government Association (SGA). On Sunday, September 23, all of the Griffin volunteers were divided into groups and assigned a “Dear Neighbor” who was in need of help.

Head Coach Laura Pruitt and a few members of the Chestnut Hill College women's basketball team were happy to participate in such a holistic event. Sophomore guard Lila Jones (Lansdale, Pa.) expressed her and her teammates' motivation to engage in Griffins Give Back, “Any time we can give a helping hand to others in our community who need it, we are always ready to give up a little of our time to make someone's day a brighter.” Jones and Coach Pruitt were joined by freshman forward Emily Soller (Bel Air, Md.) and sophomore guard Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Pleasantville, N.J.) as the Griffin foursome helped Ms. Loretta in her garden. Assisting Ms. Loretta with some Sunday morning weeding, trimming, cutting, and raking, the Griffins built a relationship with a “Dear Neighbor” and brought a new fan to Griffin Nation.

A reflective and fulfilled Jones summed up the experience, “It didn't seem like a big deal to us, but Ms. Loretta was really happy to have the company and help. So, it felt good to see her pleased.” The Chestnut Hill College community engagement initiative, Griffins Give Back, was established by the SGA to work with Center on the Hill; a community center for seniors (active adults).
