Chestnut Hill College Athletics

In the early 1960’s, under the direction of Coach Maria McHugh, the Chestnut Hill College women’s basketball program enjoyed a two-year period of success that has stood as a benchmark at the College ever since. Known to some as the Hillers, the 1963-1964 and 1964-1965, Griffins forged a 22-1 record that included multiple triumphs over schools such as Temple University, Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania, Swarthmore College, and the famous Mighty Macs of Immaculata University.  Led by their captains, Moira Hurley ‘64 and Martina McCarthy ‘65, the Griffins scored a perfect season in 1963-1964 by rattling off a combined 17 consecutive wins between varsity and junior varsity competition (Varsity 9-0 and JV 8-0).  Every member of the rosters contributed to their success. From the scoring of McCarthy and the rebounding of Joan McFadden ’67 to dreaded Diamond Zone Defense and the spirited support of Marianne Vajda ‘67 and Pat Markert ‘68 , the Griffins were a power to be reckoned with.
