The longstanding tradition of Chestnut Hill College women’s tennis started back when the tennis courts stood by the Wissahickon Creek, below the current-day Grotto. In 1968-1969, the women’s tennis team experienced a very special undefeated season. This team was characterized as a clutch and gutsy group as Sallyann Bowman ’72, Monica Cetrullo ’71, Diane Gallagher ’69, Nancy Gore ’70, Winifred Grelis ’69, Kathy Nugent ’69, Jennie Niles ’71, Neville O’Brien ’71 and Ellen Pearce, battled for 3-2 wins over Immaculata University (4/22/1969), Rosemont College (4/24/1969), and Beaver College (5/5/1969), while defeating Gwynedd-Mercy College (4/30/1969) and Drexel University (5/7/1969) in shutout fashion, 5-0. This fearless team of women found perfection in each other and earned it as a team; something that few teams ever get to experience. Their success and determination has served as an inspiration to countless current and future Griffins who have continued their battle on the campus courts.
