Box Score Old Westbury, NY – (11/13/2011) – Chestnut Hill College worked the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) from the inside-out this afternoon, as the Griffins triumphed over the Bears 97-76, behind a 29-point, ten-rebound, double-double from senior forward
Dan Comas (Philadelphia, PA). Each team finished with five players in double figures, but the Griffins were the superior shooting squad (56.5%-50.9%), especially from long range (50.0%-25.0%).
Comas laid in the first basket of the afternoon and Chestnut Hill College (3-1) never looked back. With the support of freshman center
Seamus Radtke (Philadelphia, PA), the Griffin posts provided the early offense. The advantage grew when the Griffin perimeter performers joined in. Led by junior guard
Mark DiRugeris Jr. (Woodbury, NJ), sophomore guard
Jakeem Bogans (Philadelphia, PA), and senior guard
Brandon Williams (Philadelphia, PA), the Griffins led NYIT (1-1) to a 26-point, 58-32, halftime advantage. The Bears slowly whittled away at the Griffin advantage in the second half. They would cut the margin to 14 points, 86-72, with 3:53 remaining, but that is as close as the affair would get.
Junior guard Kayvon Roberts (Corona, NY) led the Bears with 22 points. He shot well, converting 6-of-10 (60.0%) from the floor and hitting 10-fo-14 (71.4%) from the free throw line. His classmate and backcourt partner, Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, NY) helped with 14 points and seven assists, as did junior forward Azel Prather Jr. (Glenarden, MD) who offered 13 points and seven rebounds. Two other Bears finished in double figures; sophomore guard David Naves (Bowie, MD) recorded 11 points, two blocks, and two steals, while senior forward Russell Holloway (Budd Lake, NY) scored ten points.
Comas was efficient in his first double-double performance of the season, hitting 13-of-15 (86.7%) from the field and 3-of-5 (60.0%) from the charity stripe. DiRugeris finished with 16 points while also captaining the Griffins defensive effort with four steals. Radtke and Bogans each totaled 13 points, Bogans was 3-of-4 (75.0%) from three-point range and recorded all of his points in the opening half. Williams was the fifth Griffin in double figures. He scored ten points and now rests only six points shy (994) of his 1,000 career point. Comas is closing in as well, currently holding at 979 career points.
Comas and Williams will have the opportunity to make history in front of the home crowd, as the men's basketball team returns to campus to host C.W. Post University in their 7:00 p.m. home opener on Wednesday, November 16.
