Philadelphia, Pa. – (5/20/2013) – The Chestnut Hill College women tennis team surpassed the accomplishments of a remarkable 2011-2012 season with another accolade laden campaign in 2012-2013. Seniors,
Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia), were joined by junior
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) as the College's first three student-athletes to reach the 100-win milestone en route to the program's second straight National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Championship Tournament appearance.
Prior to challenging #35 Concordia College (NY) for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) crown on October 21, 5-2, Chestnut Hill College (19-9, 6-2) posted a 10-3 fall record and defeated, second-seeded, Goldey-Beacom College 5-4 in the CACC Semifinal Round. The Griffins dominated their 2012 fall schedule, convincingly taking down several regional and conference opponents for their third straight season of at least ten wins. Their run to the CACC Championship match landed the Griffins their first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Ranking on March 27; #50. When play resumed in the spring, the Griffins continued to impress, losing only two regular-season matches after returning from their Florida spring trip at 13-6 overall. Both losses came at the hands of nationally ranked foes, 7-2 versus #31 Indiana University (PA) on March 16 and 4-3 at #36 Queens College on March 30, but the experience prepared the Griffins for another NCAA DII postseason run. As the NCAA DII East Region's #5 seed, the Griffins recorded the College's first NCAA DII postseason victory with a 5-3 win over, fourth seeded, Stonehill College. Unfortunately, the Griffins exited the East Region Preliminary Round a day later, on April 28, with a 5-0 loss to, top-seeded, #14 the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). The Griffins finished 2012-2013 ranked #4 among their ITA East Region rivals.
All earning All-CACC status, Shcherbakova, Parapouras, and Dennis were significant contributors to the Griffins historic season. Shcherbakova was an All-CACC First Team selection for the third time, posting a 16-10 individual mark while contributing to a 19-9 number one doubles standing. She held the ITA East Region's #8 Individual Ranking and partnered with Parapouras as the region's #4 ranked doubles team; 11-7 at number one doubles. She collected the 100
th win of her collegiate career with Parapouras at her side in an 8-4 doubles victory at Queens College on March 31 and she was recognized with her second team Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at season's end.
Parapouras served as the team's Coach's Award winner and the ITA East Region's #19 ranked individual with the Griffins best solo record; 22-4, 21-3 at number three singles. She was the first Griffin to reach the 100 career wins, doing so with a 3-6, 7-5, and 10-5, number three singles victory over Florida Institute of Technology's (FIT) freshman Chloe Chanley (Louisville, Ky.) on February 23. She also earned her third straight selection to the All-CACC Team, this year earning second consecutive Second Team honor.
Dennis was also third time All-CACC selection as she joined Parapouras on the league's Second Team. As the ITA East Region's #13 individual competitor, Dennis finished the 2012-2013 season at 15-9 overall and 12-7 at number two singles. Her final individual win of the regular season, 6-2, 6-0 over Philadelphia University's freshman Kaylee Fennern (Idaho Falls, Idaho), served as the 100
th of her collegiate career, making her the third Griffin to reach the milestone during the 2012-2013 season. When paired with sophomore
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.), Dennis also played a role on the ITA East Region's #7 doubles team; 10-6 at number two doubles.
Other notable contributions came from freshmen
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) and
Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.), and senior captain
Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.); who joined Shcherbakova and Parapouras as the Griffins graduating class of 2013. Williams-Mulesa garnered two CACC Rookie of the Week awards (9/4 and 9/11) with a 14-4 individual record, 12-4 at number five singles, and a 13-9 doubles record. More often than not, she teamed with Owens for a 10-7 record at number three doubles. Owens was 11-9 as an individual, 8-8 at number six singles, while Knott finished her swan song at 6-4 individually and 1-0 as a number three doubles partner with Dennis.
