Shcherbakova and Oechsle Earns Weekly CACC Accolades
New Haven, CT – (10/11/2011) – Chestnut Hill College claimed 9-0 wins over Rider University, the University of the Sciences, and Post University last week, in large part, thanks to the play of junior
Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and freshman
Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, PA). For their efforts, Shcherbakova was recognized with the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week award while Oechsle was an honorable mention for the Rookie of the Week award.
Both Shcherbakova and Oechsle posted 3-0 records in their respective singles and doubles matches last week. Against Rider University on Thursday, October 6, Shcherbakova and sophomore
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH) won the top team flight for Chestnut Hill College (11-1, 6-1), 8-1, while Oechsle and junior
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) won by the same score at number two doubles. In singles play, Shcherbakova scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Broncs junior Marly Roche (Sussex, NJ) in the top flight. Oechsle defeated junior Alexa Manforti (Tom River, NJ) 6-0, 6-2 at number four singles. The Griffins got off to a strong start against the University of the Sciences on Friday, October 7. Shcherbakova and Dennis took number one doubles 8-3, while junior Oechsle and Parapouras won number two doubles 8-1. The Griffins swept singles play as well with Shcherbakova providing a 6-0, 6-1 win at number one singles and Oechsle recording a 6-3, 6-3 win at number four singles. The week concluded with a match at Post University on Saturday, October 8. The Griffins were again victorious with Shcherbakova and Dennis winning 8-2 in the top doubles flight, and Oechsle and Parapouras taking number two doubles 8-0. Individually, Shcherbakova won number one singles 6-1, 6-1, while Oechsle claimed number four singles 6-0, 6-0.
For the season, Shcherbakova is currently 11-1 at number one singles and 9-3 with Dennis at number one doubles. Oechsle currently holds an 11-1 record at both number four singles and number two doubles.
The women’s tennis team returns home to host Goldey-Beacom College in a 3:30 p.m. CACC match on Thursday, October 13.
