Covic and Garcia Arguelles Garner CACC Women’s Tennis Weekly Honor Roll Recognition
New Haven, Conn. - (10/1/2019) – Senior Mia Covic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and freshman Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain) combined for seven singles points and contributed to six doubles wins to help Chestnut Hill College to a 3-1 week and earn themselves a spot on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Tennis Weekly Honor Roll.
Garcia Arguelles secured the Scarlet and Gold’s 6-1 victory over Kutztown University (0-1) on September 23, with her 6-2, 6-3, win at number three singles (4-0). Chestnut Hill College (4-2, 3-0) entered singles play with a 1-0 edge thanks to Griffin wins at number two and number one doubles. Sophomore Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.) and Garcia Arguelles got the Griffins off to a good start with their 6-1 at number two doubles. Covic and fellow senior Barbara Broville (Toulouse, France) clinched the doubles point soon after with their 6-2 win at number one doubles. In singles play, consecutive wins from Broville, Covic, and Garcia Arguelles clinched the victory for the Griffins. Covic scored the Griffins second point of singles play with a 6-2, 6-1, win in the first flight.
Chestnut Hill College improved to 2-0 in CACC play with Wednesday’s 6-1 victory over Holy Family University (0-4, 0-3). The victory was the Griffins' third straight by that score as the Scarlet and Gold swept doubles competition and clinched the match with sequential wins at number two (6-0, 6-1), number three (6-0, 6-0), and number one (6-0, 6-0) singles. Covic and Broville clinched the doubles point with their 6-0 win in the top team flight. With the point in-hand, the Griffins also claimed number two doubles thanks to a 6-2 win by Vassalluzzo and Garcia Arguelles. In singles, the Griffins continued to dominate the Tigers with four straight individual wins. They only needed the first three to clinch the CACC score; Broville secured the first with her 6-0, 6-1, win at number two singles, the next was earned with Garcia Arguelles' 6-0, 6-0, win at number three singles, and the last was collected with Covic's 6-0, 6-0, win at number one singles.
Chestnut Hill College then improved to 3-0 CACC play with Saturday's valuable 4-3 league-victory over Post University (4-3, 2-1). Bookend wins at number one (6-1) and number three (6-4) doubles provided the Griffins with a 1-0 lead heading to singles play. There, the Griffins surrendered a 6-1, 6-0, decision at number four singles before securing the conference prize with consecutive wins at number six (6-1, 6-1), number five (6-0, 6-1), and number three (6-4, 6-3) singles. Covic and Broville opened the match with a 6-1 win at number one doubles. The Eagles kept doubles interesting with their 6-4 win in the second flight, but their rally was short-lived as senior Nicole Yang (Blue Bell, Pa.) and junior Mariana Sanchez (Trenton, N.J.) secured Chestnut Hill College the doubles point (1-0) with their 6-4 win in the third flight. At the start of singles play, the Eagles evened the match (1-1) with a 6-1, 6-0, win at number four singles. But the score did not remain tied for long as Sanchez, Vassalluzzo, and Garcia Arguelles respectively recorded individual victories at number six (6-1, 6-1), number five (6-0, 6-1), and number three (6-4, 6-3) singles.
Chestnut Hill College welcomed Bloomsburg University (1-0) to campus for Sunday's Senior Day match as the Griffins honored Covic and fellow senior Adam Gavin (Gothenburg, Sweden) prior to the opening serves. Covic was victorious in both formats, contributing to a 6-2 win at number one doubles with Broville before scoring a 6-3, 6-1, win at number one singles. Unfortunately, the resilient Huskies battled back for the doubles point before securing the 4-3 victory with late singles wins in the fourth (6-1, 6-0), fifth (6-3, 6-2), and sixth (6-0, 6-1) flights. Garcia Arguelles brought the Griffins even, 1-1, with the Huskies at the start of singles play with her 6-4, 6-3, win in the third flight. She also teamed with Vassalluzzo in an unfortunate 6-3 end at number two doubles.
