Finnegan Claims CACC Rookie Award, Daywalt Listed As Honorable Mention

New Haven, CT – (3/27/2012) – Freshman pitcher Seamus Finnegan (Philadelphia, PA) was masterful in his first collegiate win to earn the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week award, while senior second baseman Jesse Daywalt (Phoenixville, PA) earned an honorable mention for the league’s Player of the Week award after batting .600 (6-for-10) with four walks in a 4-0 for the Griffins. The Griffins swept a CACC doubleheader with Philadelphia on Tuesday, March 20, before claiming two more victories in a doubleheader with Lincoln University on Thursday, March 22.

Finnegan and Philadelphia University’s freshman pitcher Sawyer Brown (Newfield, NJ) went pitch-for-pitch in the night cap. After Finnegan completed his seventh scoreless frame, Brown took the mound looking to do the same; however, a lead-off Daywalt double down the right field line and a single through the right side had Chestnut Hill College (12-10, 3-3) thinking differently. A sacrifice fly scored Daywalt to give the Griffins a 1-0 edge and allowed the bullpen to finish the gem for Finnegan. Finnegan provided seven innings of scoreless work. He held the Rams to five hits and two walks while striking out four. For the season, Finnegan is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He has allowed six earned runs in 18 innings of work; giving up 19 hits and five walks while striking out 14.

Daywalt was on-base almost all week, going 6-for-10 (.600) with four walks in four Griffin wins. He recorded three runs and three stolen bases over the course of the week. Daywalt was 3-for-5 with two runs, two walks, and two stolen bases in the Griffins sweep of Philadelphia University. Against Lincoln University, He went 3-for-5 with two walks again, offering one run, on RBI, and a stolen base. Daywalt is currently ninth in the CACC for batting (.348, 23-for-66) and fourth in stolen bases (14-for-17, .824); he has also totaled 11 runs, four runs-batted-in, and 13 walks.
