CACC Awards Steger Honorable Mention on Weekly Release
New Haven, Conn. – (9/5/2012) – The action picked up in the second half of the Griffins first contest at the Raider Classic on Friday, August 31, as sophomore forward
Patrick Steger (La Plata, Md.) sparked Chestnut Hill College for three goals in twenty-minute stretch to outlast Shippensburg University, 3-2. His five-point (two goals and an assists) effort earned him an honorable mention on this week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate (CACC) Report.
Steger first assisted junior midfielder
Darryl Richardson Jr. (Washington Township, N.J.) at 45:16, 1-0, who quickly repaid the favor at 49:22, 2-0, before Steger added an unassisted score in the 65
th-minute (64:23) to provide the necessary insurance, 3-2. An emotional first half left the Raiders short two players and only 16 minutes into the second half Chestnut Hill College (1-0) broke the stalemate on Richardson’s tally, 1-0 (45:16). Richardson’s cross to Steger came just over four minutes later (49:22), 2-0, as play remained physical throughout. Steger’s second goal brought the Griffin lead to 3-0 with only 25:37 remaining in the affair. The Raiders mustered a response, breaking the shutout at 72:24 and threatening the Griffin victory with a second goal at 79:30. Fortunately, the Raider rally was cut short with the Griffins regaining composure and controlling the final 10:30 for the 3-2 opening triumph.
The men's soccer team opens their Central Atlantic Collegiate College (CACC) schedule in their next contest with a 3:00 p.m. kickoff at Nyack College on Saturday, September 8.
