Couillard Reels In CACC Rookie of the Week Award
New Haven, Conn. – (10/10/2012) – Sophomore forward Channing Couillard (Jacksonville, Fla.) was awarded the Central Atlantic Collegiate College (CACC) Rookie of the Week title after providing five points, including two game-winning goals, in CACC wins over Goldey-Beacom College on Monday, October 1, and Felician College on Saturday, October 6. Couillard currently ranks second on the Griffin roster for points, totaling eight on three goals and two assists.
After advancing the ball down the right side of the pitch, Chestnut Hill College (5-6-1, 3-3) scored on their ninth shot of the first half against Goldey-Beacom College when senior defenseman Anthony O’Connor (Philadelphia, Pa.) fired a deep throw-in to an awaiting Couillard crown at 35:30, 1-0. The Griffins carried their lead to the break, only to overrun the Lightning with four second-half scores, 5-0.
Later in the week against Felician College, the Griffins outshot the Golden Falcons 9-3 in the first half while also holding a 3-0 corner kick edge. With several of their chances going high or wide, Couillard’s score was the Griffins first attempt on goal. As time ticked down in the opening period, junior forward Robert Stocklin (Haddonfield, N.J.) settled the ball off a mix-up at the Golden Falcon goal-mouth before finding Couillard’s on-coming head, 1-0 (44:54). The Griffins held that edge through intermission and nearly to the 78th-minute, before adding an insurance tally. In a more balanced second half, Couillard played a ball into the Golden Falcons zone for junior forward Mushe Wamulume (Media, Pa.), who ran it down and beat the goalkeeper for the 2-0 advantage (77:55) and eventual victory.
The men's soccer team returns to CACC action on Wednesday, October 10, when they visit local rival, Philadelphia University, for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
