Melnychenko Mentioned On ECC Men’s Lacrosse Honor Roll

Central Islip, N.Y. – (3/19/2013) – Junior attack Michael Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) provided the game-winning, overtime, goal in Chestnut Hill College’s dramatic 9-8 win over the College of St. Rose on Tuesday, March 12. He finished that contest with four goals, an assist, two ground balls, and a caused turnover, before ending the week with two goals and four ground balls in the Griffins 13-8 loss at Wheeling Jesuit University on Sunday, March 17. For his efforts, Melnychenko was recognized with a spot on the East Coast Conference (ECC) Week Four Honor Roll.

Against the College of St. Rose, a Golden Knight second-half rally forced overtime, but fortunately, Chestnut Hill College (3-3) would only need one more shot to seal the victory. Sophomore midfielder Sean Johnsen (Toms River, N.J.) won the initial faceoff, raced down field, and located Melnychenko for the game-winner just six seconds (3:54) into the extra frame, 9-8. Melnychenko headlined the evening with four goals, an assist, two ground balls, and a turnover.

After two goals from senior attack Craig Owen (Glenolden, Pa.), Melnychenko gave the Griffins a 3-2 first quarter lead. Unfortunately, (RV) Wheeling Jesuit University rallied on their home turf for a 13-8 victory over the Griffins.  The Cardinals broke away from the Griffins in the second quarter with junior attack Brian Frank (Huntingtown, Md.) and freshman midfielder Connor Summers (Mechanicsville, Md.) igniting the home team for a 11-5 run to the final horn.

Melnychenko totaled six goals, an assist, six ground balls, and a caused turnover for the week. He currently leads the Griffins in assists (8) and points (18), while ranking second in goals (10) and tied for third in ground balls (10).

The men's lacrosse team begins their East Coast Conference (ECC) schedule in their next contest; a 3:30 p.m. home contest against Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday, March 23.
