DiGiovanni Draws CACC Player of the Week Award

New Haven, Conn. – (9/16/2013) – Senior forward Carly DiGiovanni (Seaville, N.J.) tallied three goals this week, including two amidst Chestnut Hill College’s 5-1 second half run at Post University on Sunday, September 15, to earn herself Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week honors. DiGiovanni registered her first goal of the week as the Griffins only goal against Bloomsburg University, on Tuesday, September 10.

As time ticked off the game clock on Victory Field #1, the intensity picked up on the turf with Chestnut Hill College (1-3, 1-0) and Bloomsburg University battling through a full extra frame before junior midfielder Julia Rios (Millersville, Pa.) scored the game-winner at 107:50. DiGiovanni gave the Griffins the initial lead when she found the back of the net off a pass from her classmate, midfielder Marykate McShane (Lebanon, Pa.) at 55:27. Unfortunately, the Huskies retaliated less than four minutes later, 1-1 (59:14), tying the affair and later stealing victory in a 2-1 double overtime final.

It was a big day for the Griffin offense on Sunday, September 15, as they erupted for five second-half goals in a 5-2 CACC victory at Post University. DiGiovanni scored twice in the Griffins second-half run that also included goals from junior Kelly McKenna (Dover, Del.), McShane (Lebanon, Pa.) and sophomore defender Christina Mangeri (Muttontown, N.Y.). The Eagles had grabbed an early lead at 3:28, 1-0, but the Griffins denied the Eagles any additional breathing room before McShane ignited the offense just after halftime, 1-1 (45:58). Her unassisted tally was followed by three more great individual Griffin efforts, McKenna at 46:42, 2-1, and DiGiovanni twice, first at 49:17, 3-1, and again at 54:52, 4-1. A second home tally looked to get the Eagles back in the game, but Griffins regained composure and fended off the Eagles before junior midfielder Morgan Fell (Boyertown, Pa.) found Mangeri for a last-minute insurance goal at 89:02, 5-2.

The women's soccer team plays their next CACC contest on Saturday, September 21, when they visit Felician College for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
