Connor Draws CACC Women’s Tennis Weekly Honor Roll Recognition with Debut Victory
New Haven, Conn. - (3/16/2021) – Freshman Alani Naje Connor (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) was the only Griffin to record a point in Chestnut Hill College's first two matches of the season as she scored a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7, number five singles win in her collegiate debut. The victory earned her an appearance on this week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Tennis Honor Roll.
For the first time since March 9, 2020, the Chestnut Hill College engaged in competition. The restart brought the Griffins to Ambler, Pennsylvania's Upper Dublin Sports Center, where they lost to St. Joseph's University by a 6-1 final. Connor was the lone Griffin to record a victory, doing so in her Scarlet and Gold debut with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7, comeback win at number five singles. Earlier in the match, she fought to an unfortunate 6-4 conclusion in the third doubles flight with junior Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.).
On Saturday, February 20, Vassalluzzo and sophomore Carlota Garcia Arguelles (Madrid, Spain) battled to a 6-4 loss at number three doubles, but Loyola University (1-0) had already secured the doubles point with wins in the first, 6-0, and second, 6-2, flights. The match score tied momentarily with Vassalluzzo’s default win at number six singles, 1-1, but the Greyhounds did not let the stalemate last long as they score points in the second (6-0, 6-3), first (7-5, 6-3), third (3-6, 7-5, 6-0), fourth (6-4, 6-3), and fifth (6-2, 1-6, 11-9) individual flights to defeat Chestnut Hill College (0-2) by a 6-1 measure. Connor battled with freshman Nele Haag (Tauberbischofsheim, Germany) at number one doubles and took the loss at number five singles.
Chestnut Hill College continues their schedule on Wednesday, March 17, when they welcome the University of Sciences (USciences) to campus for a 2:30 p.m. Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match.
