New Haven, Conn. - (4/19/2021) – Senior utility Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) batted .444 (12-for-27) with five doubles and two home runs, helping Chestnut Hill College to a 5-2 week of league play and earning himself a spot on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Weekly Honor Roll. Uzzell opened the week with a 5-for-9 effort versus Thomas Jefferson University (April 12) that included four doubles, two runs, a run-batted-in (RBI), a stolen base. He later hit a grand slam in a 2-for-5 performance against the University of the Sciences (USciences) (April 14), and went 3-for-5 with four runs, two RBI, and a stolen base in a sweep of Caldwell University (April 16), before closing the week with a 2-for-8, two-game effort versus the Devils.
Uzzell and sophomore right fielder Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa.) powered Chestnut Hill College (8-12, 5-8) to a 10-5 victory in the first game with Thomas Jefferson University on April 12. The second game was tighter, knotting at 2-2 in the first inning and 3-3 in the fourth inning, before the Rams outscored the Griffins in the sixth, 5-4, and seventh, 6-4.
Amidst a busy week of league action, Chestnut Hill College welcomed USciences to Hostelley Field for a nine-inning league affair. Each side scored a run through the first three innings, 1-1, but the Scarlet and Gold answered a second Devil run, 2-1, and broke the contest open in the bottom of the fourth inning with a series of hits batsmen, walks, and a Uzzell grand slam, 7-2. Meanwhile, junior Pat Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) handed a solid four-inning start (4.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 6K) off to sophomore Dan Rockenbach (Holland, Pa.) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), who finished the contest for his third win (3-0) of the season, 10-5.
Chestnut Hill College picked up their third and fourth CACC win of the week with Friday's doubleheader sweep of Caldwell University. The opener was an instant Scarlet and Gold Classic as the Cougars negated early Griffins runs with a five-run fifth inning and grabbed an 8-5 extra-inning edge only for Dunnuck to send a 3-0 fastball into the Hostelley Field parking lot for a bottom of the eighth walk-off grand slam, 9-8. Chestnut Hill College used the momentum and a superb pitching performance from junior Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa.) (6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 8 K) to control the nightcap to an 8-1 end.
The end came to busy week of CACC play with a trip to Franklin D. Roosevelt Park. The Griffins got revenge on the Devils’ 13-6 game-one win with another dramatic victory in game two. Down 5-3 in the seventh inning, the Scarlet and Gold used a lead off home run from Dunnuck, 5-4, and a two-out, two-run single from freshman left fielder Zach Ahmed (Las Vegas, Nev.) to come out ahead, 6-5.
Chestnut Hill College returns to Hostelley Field on Tuesday, April 20, to host Wilmington University in a 6:00 p.m. CACC contest.
