Raia Fans Record 12 to Earn CACC Pitcher of the Week Award
New Haven, Conn. – (3/17/2014) – Junior pitcher
Dominic Raia III (Philadelphia, Pa.) struck out 12 Lions in a 9-0, seven-inning win over Lincoln University (PA) on Tuesday, March 11, to earn himself his second career Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Pitcher of the Week title. The Griffins ace held the Lions to four base runners, allowing only one hit and three walks in the complete-game shutout.
Raia handcuffed the Lions in the opener, allowing one hit and striking out a program-record 12, while the Griffins picked up the lumber in a nine-run effort. A lead-off single and a stolen base put sophomore first baseman
Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.) in prime position to score on Steen’s following second-inning single, 1-0. Two hits, a hit batsman, four walks, and a Lion error contributed to the Griffin fifth, 7-0, and in the sixth, the Griffins platted two more on bases-loaded, pinch-hit single from junior
Seamus Finnegan (Collegeville, Pa.), 9-0.
In a more competitive game two, Chestnut Hill College (3-7) took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the second inning and came out of a 4-4 third-inning tie with a 5-4 victory after a fourth-inning sacrifice fly from freshman
Grant Opalisky (Ambler, Pa.) and a quality relief appearance from senior pitcher
John Bernhardt III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.); W (1-0), 4.0 IP, 4H, 0R, 1BB, 5K.
The baseball team is scheduled to open their CACC schedule on Wednesday, March 19, when they visit the University of the Sciences (USciences) for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
