Melnychenko Makes Third ECC Honor Roll Appearance
Central Islip, N.Y. - (3/17/2014) – Senior attack
Michael Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) earned his third East Coast Conference (ECC) Weekly Honor Roll appearance with four goals, including the game-winner, in Chestnut Hill College’s 11-10 overtime defeat of #12 Molloy College. As the league’s third leading scorer (18 goals), he was also an ECC Honor Roll mention for the weeks ending March 12 and February 23.
Chestnut Hill College (2-3, 1-1) led Molloy College (3-2, 0-2) early with two first-quarter goals from senior midfielder
Zachary Donnelly (Newtown Square, Pa.) giving the home team a 2-1 edge. Junior attack Joe Leonard (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the Lion response that brought the visitors to a 5-3 halftime lead and a 7-5 third-quarter advantage, before sophomore attack
George Markey (Branchburg, N.J.) evened the score with 12:26 remaining in regulation, 7-7. Two minutes later, Melnychenko gave the Griffins their first lead since the first quarter, 8-7 (10:23), but that was only the beginning of the drama as the contest knotted three more times and nearly endured nearly a full overtime before Melnychenko snuck a low shot past the Lion goalkeeper with 24 seconds (0:24) to go in the extra frame, 11-10.
The men’s lacrosse team continues their ECC schedule on Sunday, March 23, with a 1:00 p.m. match at Mercy College.
