Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week Title
Philadelphia, PA – (9/21/2010) – Sophomore Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) concluded a magnificent individual week for Chestnut Hill College at the USTA/ITA East Regional Tournament. Shcherbakova reached the semifinal round of both the Women’s A Singles and A Doubles draws to garner the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week award.
In duals matches, Shcherbakova scored two individual victories at number one singles for Chestnut Hill College (2-3, 1-1). She first defeated junior Sara Wilkins (Williamstown, NJ) of Caldwell College 6-0, 6-0 on Tuesday, September 14. Then on Friday, September 17, she recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over senior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, MA) of Stonehill College. She was equally as impressive in doubles action, earning two wins at number one doubles as a teammate of freshman Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH). Shcherbakova and Dennis topped Wilkins and junior Amanda Berry (Swedesboro, NJ) of Caldwell College 8-0 and also won against Herchel and sophomore Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, MA) of Stonehill College 8-1.
The week did not end there, as Shcherbakova reached semifinal play in the Women’s A Singles draw of the USTA/ITA East Regional Tournament. As the #7 seed, Shcherbakova defeated freshman Paulina Sotomayor (San Antonio, TX) of Bentley University 6-0, 6-1, then topped sophomore Jin Querubin (Mississauga, Ontario) of Holy Family University 7-5, 6-4, before upsetting #2 senior Catalina Echeverry (Cali, Columbia) of Southern New Hampshire University win a 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 triumph. Unfortunately, she lost to senior #3 senior Laura Mocodeanu (Hyde Park, NY) of Queens College 6-0, 6-3 in Women’s A Semifinals. In the Women’s A Doubles draw, Shcherbakova and Dennis team for two wins, including an 8-3 quarterfinals upset of #2 sophomore Erika Goldsmith (Edison, NJ) and junior Andrea Solvetova (Czech Republic) of Queens College. However, Shcherbakova and Dennis fell 8-6 in the semifinals to #4 Querubin and sophomore Juliana Victoria (Guayaquil, Ecuador) of Holy Family University.
The women’s tennis team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule with a 3:00 p.m. match at the University of the Sciences on Wednesday, September 22.
