Looby Grabs Second CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. – (5/5/2014) – Bringing home two runs in Chestnut Hill College’s 9-5 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Opening Round loss to #5 Dominican College and three hits (3-for-8) in the Griffins CACC regular-season sweep of Post University, sophomore left fielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.) earned his second showing on the league’s Weekly Honor Roll.

Looby singled in a run in the third inning of a 5-3, game-one, loss at Post University before his fourth-inning homerun accounted for the only Chestnut Hill College (17-18, 12-8) tally of game two, 4-1. In the CACC Opening Round contest against Dominican College, Looby knocked in senior second baseman Mark Woltemate (Philadelphia, Pa.) with a first-inning ground-out to shortstop and a seventh-inning double. The Griffins recorded the affair's first run with Looby’s grounder to short, 1-0, but each side scored in the second inning, 2-1, before all came even with the Chargers scoring a third-inning run on an error, a double, and a ground-out to second base, 2-2. The Chargers used a lead-off single to manufacture a run in the third inning, 3-2, and the Griffins knotted the game once more with a double from freshman shortstop Preston Koehler (Bath, Pa.) and a two-out flare to centerfield from senior center fielder Desmond Lites (Philadelphia, Pa.) scoring the game-tying tally, 3-3. The turning point came in the seventh inning with the Chargers a lead-off single and some Griffin miscues allowing the visitors to score three runs on two hits and three errors, 6-3. Down but not out, a lead-off walk to sophomore first baseman Patrick Campion (Norristown, Pa.), a sacrifice bunt, a Woltemate infield single, a pinch-hit sacrifice fly from sophomore Nobel Unger III (Hatboro, Pa.),  and a Looby double bringing the home team back within one after eight innings, 6-5. Unfortunately, the Chargers would score three more runs in the top of the ninth, giving the Griffins little chance for a comeback, 9-5.

Looby earned his first CACC Weekly Honor Roll mention batting .353 (6-for-17), with a homerun, five runs-batted-in (RBI), and five runs scored in a 2-3 week against Lincoln University, Briarcliffe College, and Nyack College. He finished the season leading the Griffins in batting average (.325, 41-for-126), hits (41), doubles (10), homeruns (3), RBI (24), and slugging (.476).
