Oechsle and Hills Earn CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. – (10/1/2014) – Chestnut Hill College disposed of another Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent in shutout fashion with a 9-0 defeat of Holy Family University on Wednesday, September 24. Following that triumph, the Griffins competed as individuals in the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championship. Leading the effort were senior Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, Pa.) and freshman Hannah Hills (Maize, Kan.), who earned Honor Roll mentions on this week’s CACC Women’s Tennis Report.

Holy Family University (3-4, 1-2) provided Chestnut Hill College (4-1, 4-0) mild competition in the opening round of doubles play as the Griffins jumped out to a 3-0 advantage with Oechsle and junior Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) winning number two doubles, 8-0, while Hills and junior Hayley Craskey (Aston, Pa.) secured victory at number three doubles, 8-3. Senior Charlotte Dawson (Odessa, Texas) and junior Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) won number one doubles, 8-2. Singles play was slightly more competitive with the Tigers taking the Griffins to three sets at number one singles, 6-1, 1-6, 10-4, and forcing a tiebreaker in the first set of Oechsle’s victory at number three singles, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4. Fortunately, the Griffins won both points and all the remaining individual flights, including Hills 6-1, 6-1, win at number six singles 6-1, 6-1.

The Chestnut Hill College men’s and women’s tennis team traveled to Queens College for a weekend of individual competition at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Championship. Oechsle turned in the Griffins top performance, reaching the round of eight in the Women’s B Singles Draw. Oechsle was the story for the Griffins, scoring two wins in the Women’s B Singles Draw and teaming with Owens for a semifinal run in the Women’s B Doubles Draw.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams now return to their regular team schedules; the women will resume their CACC schedule with a 3:30 p.m. match at Goldey-Beacom College on Wednesday, October 1, while the men rest until a 1:00 p.m. dual match with West Chester University on Friday, October 10.
