Jaffe and Casaletto Collect CACC Weekly Awards, Jackson Earns Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. – (10/22/2014) – For their play in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) wins over Holy Family University, 3-1 on October 14, and Nyack College, 2-1 on October 18, junior midfielder Nicholas Jaffe (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman midfielder Joseph Casaletto (Sewell, N.J.) were respectively honored as the league’s Player and Rookie of the Week while sophomore goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) was recognized as a Honor Roll selection for the Defensive Player of the Week award.

On October 14, Chestnut Hill College (7-6-1, 6-2-1) did something it had never done before, knocking off visiting CACC rival Holy Family University for the first time since joining National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II in 2007. Jaffe sandwiched a pair of assists – one to Casaletto and another to junior forward Juan Amaya (Cartagena, Colombia) - around a penalty-kick goal of his own that lead the Griffins to a 3-1 victory and snapped the Tigers' seven-game winning streak in the series.

The captain's through ball threaded the defense and found Casaletto at the left post, and the freshman found the back of the net for the second time in as many games at 23:01, 1-0. Holy Family University (5-5-4, 2-4-3) quickly netted the equalizer, but the Griffins went right back to work, as senior midfielder Michael Hester (Seaport, N.Y.) made a run and was brought down in the box, granting the hosts a penalty kick. For the second straight game, Jaffe converted from the spot, chipping the ball over the Tiger goalkeeper to make it 2-1 Griffins at 32:06. The Griffins retained their slim advantage until the 71st minute, when Jaffe dribbled into the box and passed off to Amaya in the left corner. The junior forward plugged the lower right corner of the net with a left-footed shot for his seventh goal of the season, 3-1 (70:18). Jackson made five saves to pick up the win.

In an action-packed CACC affair at Nyack College (0-11-2, 0-7-1), all three scores came in the first 40 minutes of play. Amaya opened the scoring at 16:41, but after a game-tying strike from the Warriors the Griffins needed the fortuitous foot of Casaletto to find victory. The Warriors were the early aggressor, building to a series of shots during the seventh and eighth minutes of competition. But all their efforts were forced high, wide, or blocked by Griffin defense. Meanwhile, the Griffins continue their efficient offensive play, as they answered the Warriors with a goal on their first shot. Amaya put the game's first tally on the scoreboard at 16:41, 1-0, and the Griffins used the momentum to keep the ball in the Warriors end. Unfortunately, all things were brought even less than ten minutes later, 1-1 (26:01). But around the 30-minute mark the Griffins began to seize control again, issuing strikes during the 34th, 37th, and 38th minutes before Casaletto deposited the game-winner just 5:55 before halftime (39:05). Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) made four saves in the win (7-5-1).

The men's soccer team looks to continue their recent CACC winning streak on Wednesday, October 22, when they return to Victory Field #1 for a 4:00 p.m. league contest against Goldey-Beacom College.
