New Haven, Conn. - (3/2/2015) – Helping to bring Head Coach Albert Stroble one win closer to 100, the Chestnut Hill College men’s tennis team offered a pair of representatives on this week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Report after a 1-3 trip to Florida over Spring Break. Freshman Daniel Awad (Cartagena, Colombia) was named Rookie of the Week after winning twice in the Griffins 7-1 victory over Capital University on Tuesday, February 24, while senior Michael Humes (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) picked up an Honor Roll mention after three triumphs, starting with the Griffins only point in an 8-1 loss to Davenport and a pair of number six singles wins against #47 Florida Institute of Technology and #13 Rollins.

After having two days to warm up under the rays of the Florida sun, the Chestnut Hill College tennis teams began their spring schedules with matches against Davenport University and the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) on Monday, February 23. The Griffin men got an early start, traveling to the Star Island Resort in Kissimmee for an 8:00 a.m. match against Davenport University before returning to Melbourne for a dual match at FIT. Unfortunately, the Griffins ended the day empty-handed as the Panthers of Davenport University defeated the men 8-1 prior to the Panthers of FIT securing respective 5-4 and 7-2 triumphs over the Griffins men and women.

Chestnut Hill College's (3-3) only point against Davenport University (3-4) came at number one doubles, where the partnership of Humes and freshman Pedro Oranges de Figueredo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) earned the Griffins a dramatic 8-7 (7-4) triumph. Unfortunately, the Panthers secured the bottom two doubles matches by identical 8-4 finals before sweeping the Griffins in individual play. Junior Henry Boyle (London, England) and senior Devin Hampton (Midland, Texas) had the Griffins best singles success, dropping respective decisions as number two (2-6, 6-4, 11-9) and number four (7-6 (7-4), 6-2) singles.

Both the men's and women's tennis teams earned wins the next day as a 5-4 final earned the Griffin women a victory over #37 University of Tampa and a 7-1 final brought the Griffin men a triumph just before the afternoon showers settled in at Star Island Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. The men's win over Capital University begins the count down to 100 career victories for Stroble, who currently has 96 wins in his ninth season as the director of the program. Senior Sammy Atri (Mexico City, Mexico) and junior Kevin Taylor (Burlington, N.J.) combined for an 8-4 win in the top doubles match. Their effort was matched by Boyle and Hampton, who scored an 8-4 win at number two singles. But, freshman Marco Gobbato (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Awad outdid them both with an 8-3 third-flight triumph. Singles play was rushed as skies darkened above. With most playing pro-sets, the Griffins were victorious at number one, three, four, and five singles thanks to the respective individual efforts of Boyle (8-4), Taylor (8-1), Hampton (6-2, 6-2), Awad (5-7, 6-2, 10-7).

Warm weather tennis came to a close on Thursday, February 26 as the Griffins visited Rollins College for a pair of nationally ranked matches. The men's team took a hard-fought, 7-2 loss to the #13 Tars. Chestnut Hill College (4-4) had trouble getting anything started as Rollins College (3-3) secured all three doubles flights (1: 8-3, 2: 8-1, 3: 9-7) before seniors, Steven Say (Cannes, France) and Humes managed to end the shutout with respective victories at number four (2-6, 6-4, 10-6) and number six (6-4, 6-4) singles.
