?Markey Makes ECC Weekly Honor Roll

Central Islip, N.Y. - (3/8/2015) – Junior attack George Markey (Branchburg, N.J.) totaled five points in a 1-1 week for Chestnut Hill College to earn a mention on this week’s East Coast Conference (ECC) Honor Roll. Markey first scored three goals and provided an assist in the Griffins 10-9 win over the College of St. Rose on Tuesday, March 3, before scoring his eighth goal of the season in a 13-9 ECC loss at #12 Molloy College on Sunday, March 8.

On Sunday, a slow start put Chestnut Hill College (2-2, 0-1) at a disadvantage as a 13-2 shooting edge procured Molloy College (3-0, 2-0) a 4-1 first-quarter lead that facilitated a critical 13-9 league victory. Markey scored the first tally of the fourth quarter which brought the Griffins within four, 10-6, of the Lions with 13:41 remaining in the contest. It was his eighth of the season, surpassing his personal best of seven set during his sophomore campaign (2014).

Battling the elements, the Griffins played their home opener against College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon. In a back-and-forth tug-of-war played within a one-goal margin – and under a blanket of snow and freezing rain – for almost the entirety of the second half, the Griffins came away triumphant on the stick of senior midfielder Nicholas Johnson (Germantown, Md.), whose go-ahead strike with 6:50 to play provided the knockout punch in a 10-9 thriller at chilly Victory Field #1.

Markey started the party with an unassisted tally, 1-1 (12:36), and he added a second goal as the home side built a 4-1 first-quarter lead. He scored his third goal at the start of the second half to push the Griffins to an 8-6 halftime lead, but the Lions scored the only two tallies of the frame to bring all things even by the end of the third quarter, 8-8. In the pivotal fourth quarter, Markey came through again, connecting with sophomore attack Alec Dambach (Howell, N.J.) to complete his hat trick with a man-up rocket that gave the Griffins a one-goal lead, 9-8, with 12:14 remaining. The Golden Knights would knot the game for a fourth time at 8:27, 9-9, but a minute and a half later, Johnson put the Griffins ahead to stay with his second tally of the season, 10-9 (6:50). It was a second straight hat-trick for Markey, who currently leads the Griffins with 13 points (eight goals and five assists).

The men's lacrosse team continues their season on Sunday, March 15, when they return to Victory Field #1 to host Wheeling Jesuit University in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
