Kelley’s Versatility Paves Way for CACC Weekly Honor Roll Nod

New Haven, Conn. - (4/13/2015) – Freshman outfielder Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.) took full advantage of his increased playing time over the previous week, playing a major role in the Chestnut Hill College baseball team’s 6-2 mark. After hitting .350 (7-for-20) with six stolen bases, five runs scored and four runs-batted-in (RBI), the rookie was named to the Honor Roll of the latest Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Report.

The Chestnut Hill College bats stayed hot in Wednesday’s doubleheader sweep at The Lincoln University. Leading 4-1 in the opener, the Griffins tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh when lead-off singles from sophomore center fielder Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) and Kelley set the table for another big inning. Kelley finished 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored in the 8-4 victory, then followed with a 2-for-4 performance in the nightcap; Kelley drove in two runs, scored another, and swiped two bags in an 11-5 triumph.

Opportunism was the operative word as Chestnut Hill College team took advantage of a litany of miscues by Felician College to earn a critical sweep of the defending CACC champions in a Thursday doubleheader dripping with playoff implications. The Griffins rode the right arm of senior pitcher Brandon DiBona (Philadelphia, Pa.) to a 6-3 decision in game one, while four Golden Falcon balks and two ill-timed errors allowed the visitors to steal the nightcap, 5-2, and stretch their winning streak to six games with two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Kelley contributed to the sweep with his arm and his bat, scoring a run in game one and tossing a scoreless eighth inning in game two.

Trailing 4-0 in the opener of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against Briarcliffe College (NY), the Griffins scripted a stirring turnaround, sending 12 men to the plate in an eight-run frame that laid the groundwork for an 11-4 triumph. Game two was not so prosperous, as the Bulldogs held down the Chestnut Hill College attack and earned a split with a 7-1 verdict in game two. Kelley was the table-setter, going 1-for-4 two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base from the leadoff spot in the opener before reaching base on a single and a beanball in game two.

Chestnut Hill College packed its bats for a CACC doubleheader at Dominican College (NY) Sunday afternoon, pounding out 13 hits and setting a season high for runs scored in a 16-6 game one slugfest. The Griffins were not so potent in the second half of the twin bill, where the Chargers overturned a fifth-inning deficit with nine unanswered runs on the road to a 10-2 decision. A pinch-runner in the opener, Kelly stole a base and scored a run in a three-run seventh; he finished 1-for-4 with another steal in game two.

Chestnut Hill College next heads across town for a single game against CACC rival Philadelphia University; first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16.
