Men’s Lacrosse Trio Recognized for Roles in Recent Surge

Central Islip, N.Y. - (4/13/2015) – The Chestnut Hill College men’s lacrosse team accounted for a large portion of today’s East Coast Conference (ECC) Weekly Report, as freshman attack Dylan Klusaritz (Slatington, Pa.) and sophomore goalkeeper Thomas McDermott (Holmes, Pa.) were named the league’s Rookie of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively. Junior attack Michael Plaia (Hicksville, N.Y.) was named to the Honor Roll after supporting Klusaritz with a pair of prolific games in a 2-0 week for the Griffins.

Consolidating the momentum from last week's upset of 12th-ranked Mercy College, Chestnut Hill College developed a plan during its seven-day layoff and executed it to perfection on Tuesday. The Griffins controlled from start to finish, rolling past visiting Dominican College (NY), 11-2, for their second straight ECC triumph. Plaia took just 80 seconds to find his scoring touch en route to a career-high five goals as the scarlet and gold racked up a season-best 47 shots. Plaia doubled his season goal total with his breakout performance, and Klusaritz garnered three points on a goal and two assists in addition to five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Junior defenseman Derick Darnulc (Baldwin, N.Y.) spurred a stingy defense with four ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Griffins, who received stellar efforts from their goalie tandem. McDermott made six saves (4-6) before giving way to rookie Drew Lamela (Brick, N.J./ Montclair State University), who stoned eight shots without allowing a goal over the game's final 19 minutes.

The victory was Chestnut Hill College's fourth straight in the series, while the two goals allowed marked the Griffins' fewest since a 19-0 shutout of Penn State Abington in 2011.

Continuing a pattern of late-season surges, the Griffins dominated the middle portion of their ECC tilt at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Friday evening, using an 11-3 burst to turn a tie game into a sizeable cushion en route to a 15-12 decision. Klusaritz erupted for a career-best seven points and attack mate Plaia notched his second straight five-point effort as the Griffins stayed alive in the playoff race with their third straight victory.

Klusaritz registered three goals and four assists, the highest point and assist totals by a Griffin this season; he now leads the team in both categories. Plaia, meanwhile, ended on a three-goal, two-assist night. Sophomore defenseman Daniel DePasquale (Livingston, N.J.) manned the Chestnut Hill College back line with three caused turnovers and a trio of ground balls in front of McDermott, who racked up 11 saves (5-6).

A year ago, the Griffins finished the season on a four-game winning streak. Still needing help to return to the ECC playoffs, they'll look to repeat that feat in their conference finale, a 12:00 p.m. Senior Day face-off against Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday, April 18.
