5K Records Require CACC Weekly Awards For Martines, Antall, and Lopez
New Haven, Conn. - (10/19/2015) – With his second first-place run of the season, sophomore Giancarlo Martines (Cherry Hill, N.J.) set a school record in the five-kilometer (5k, 16:19.6) and garnered his second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Runner of the Week award of the year. He was joined on the league’s weekly report by junior Paige Antall (Hanover Township, Pa.) and freshman Raquel Lopez (East Meadow, N.Y.), who both were selected as Honor Roll mentions for the women’s weekly top runner and rookie awards.
The Chestnut Hill College men's and women's cross country teams tuned up for next weekend's CACC Championship Meet with strong showings at Saturday morning's Cougar Chase Invitational, hosted by Caldwell University. The women finished second among a field of ten programs (71 points), while the men placed third (3rd of 8, 71 points) behind another first-place run from Martines, who set a school record in the five-kilometer (5k) format with a time of 16:19.6.
The women's side was paced by a pair of 5K record-setting performances from Antall and Lopez, who crossed the line less than five seconds apart to place fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 20:55.4 and 20:59.8.
Martines took home his second individual title of the fall, adding to his first-place finish in the eight-kilometer (8k) Philadelphia Metro Meet. He was 2.3 seconds abreast of Concordia College (NY) senior Victor Palumbo (Eastchester, N.Y.), the runner-up who ran unattached to a clocking of 16:21.9. Those two were nearly a full minute ahead of Post University junior John Ducham (Waterbury, Conn.), who was third in 17:15.2.
Both Griffin squads now brace for the CACC Championships, held Sunday, October 25, at Philadelphia's Belmont Plateau.
