Szumigala Makes Second Appearance On CACC Weekly Honor Roll
New Haven, Conn. – (4/18/2016) – Freshman third baseman Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.) earned his second appearance on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Weekly Honor Roll with last week’s 5-for-12 (.417) effort. The Griffins rookie at the hot corner was 3-for-6 in a pair of CACC losses versus Dominican College before recording a hit in each game of a historic CACC sweep at Wilmington University.
In Wednesday's CACC doubleheader, Chestnut Hill College dropped a pair of one-run games to Dominican College, who rallied for wins in the ninth inning of both contest, 5-4 and 7-6. Szumigala recorded two hits in the opener while senior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), senior left fielder Brendan Looby (Sewell, N.J.), and sophomore pinch hitter Demetrius Isaac (Philadelphia, Pa.) record two runs-batted-in (RBI) in the nightcap. In game one, Szumigala led off the third inning with a single and later scored on a single to left field from junior center fielder Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa.) before tripling in the game-tying run in the sixth inning. He also scored in the sixth inning and singled in the eighth inning of game two.
After not defeating Wilmington University once in eight years, Chestnut Hill College did it twice in one day with Saturday’s CACC doubleheader sweep. The Griffins won the opener 6-3 thanks to a four-run fourth inning and six innings of winning relief from junior Dylan Borawski (Hatfield, Pa.) before scoring two game-winning, eighth-inning runs on a pair of walks with the bases loaded, 4-3. Senior catcher Robert Slagle III (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) recorded three hits (3-for-5) in the opener while junior right fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) split four hits (4-for-8) between the two the two affairs. Szumigala walked in the second inning of game one before singling and scoring in the fourth inning. In game two, he singled with two out in the second inning.
The Griffins face their next CACC foe on Monday, April 18, when they visit Nyack College for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
