Fussen Obtains CACC Honor Roll Mention With Lone Griffin Tally versus Redhawks
New Haven, Conn. - (9/6/2016) – In recognition of his performance at Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday, September 3, senior defenseman Nils Fussen (Aachen, Germany) was mentioned on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Soccer Weekly Honor Roll. An early Fussen goal and a well-played first half from senior goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) put Chestnut Hill College in the cat bird seat headed for the second half of the season opener versus the Redhawks. Unfortunately, a tragic two-minute stretch turned the tide as the home team used back-to-back two connections to tie the affair in the 63rd minute (62:13) and win it in the 64th minute (63:23), 2-1.
Fussen scored the lone Chestnut Hill College (0-1) goal of the game at 3:04, beating the Roberts Wesleyan College (1-1) goalkeeper to the bottom left corner of the net on a 20-yard direct kick, 1-0. The tally made efficient use of the Griffins’ five first-half shots, while Jackson made saves on four of the Redhawks’ five shots to leave the Scarlet and Gold ahead at halftime. After the break, the home team’s aggressive play pushed Chestnut Hill College to their limit, forcing a pair of Griffin cards on either side of the connections between junior defenseman Sam Moody (Toronto, Ontario) and senior midfielder Malcolm Shaw (Pickering, Ontario). Fussen led the Griffins with three shots while junior midfielder Charles Simpson (Dalgety Bay, Scotland) and junior forward Zachary Gray (West Sussex. England) split their other four shots. Jackson (0-1) took the loss despite making six saves.
The Chestnut Hill College men’s soccer team will look to even their record on Wednesday, September 7, when they welcome the New York Institute Technology (NYIT) to Victory Field #1 for their 4:00 p.m. home opener.
