Avena and Griffins Headline
CACC’s Weekly Awards for Men’s Tennis
New Haven, CT – (3/23/2010) – Sophomore Adrian Avena (Vineland, NJ) was named Player of the Week by the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) for the week ending March 21. Freshman Pat Joson (Old Bridge, NJ) joined Avena on the weekly report as the conferences Rookie of the Week.
Avena was 2-0 at number six singles last week, including a 7-5, 6-1 comeback win over Mike Antolini (Princeton, WV) of St. Thomas Aquinas College. The dramatic victory inspired Chestnut Hill College (5-4) to a 6-3 win over the Spartans. Avena also went 2-1 with sophomore David Negron (Philadelphia, PA) at number three doubles. Overall, Avena is 4-2 at number six singles this year and 5-3 at number three doubles.
Joson was 1-2 at number two singles and number one doubles this week. He recorded his individual win against Bill Nason (Burke, VA) of La Salle University, 6-4, 7-5. Joson scored the Griffins’ lone point against the Explorers at number two singles. He also teamed with fellow freshman Joe Boyle (Doylestown, PA) for an 8-0 defeat of junior Nick Cittadino (Brick, NJ) freshman Killian Watzen (Chantenois, France) in the top doubles match with St. Thomas Aquinas College.
Joson was an honorable mention for the CACC Rookie of the Week award for the week ending March 14, as well. He was 3-4 at number two singles and 4-4 at number one doubles on the Griffins’ trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina. Negron went 3-0 in singles and doubles play to help the Griffins to a 2-1 at the Hilton Head Golf and Tennis Resort. He was an honorable mention for the CACC Player of the Week award.
The men’s tennis team visits the University of the Sciences for their next match. The CACC match is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start on Thursday, March 25.
