Gelfan Garners First CACC Weekly Mention
New Haven, Conn. - (11/14/2016) – Making her first appearance of the season on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Volleyball Weekly Reports, junior right side Samantha Gelfan (Chandler, Ariz.) earned Honor Roll recognition with her contributions during the Griffins’ 2-1 week of league play opposite the University of the Sciences (USciences), Philadelphia University, and Goldey-Beacom College. Gelfan recorded double-digit kills in Chestnut Hill College’s wins over the Devils and the Lightning to tie senior outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) for the team’s best three-match kill total, but she led the Scarlet and Gold in points for the week with 29.5 and did so efficiently with the team’s best second best weekly hitting percentage (.340, 25K-7E-53TA).
A 2-0 advantage, built on strong team defense and a balanced offensive front, was key for Chestnut Hill College 13-15, 11-8) in a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-12) CACC victory over USciences on Tuesday, November 8. Gelfan topped the Scarlet and Gold offensive production with 10 kills on a .421 (10K-2E-19TA) hitting percentage, meanwhile senior libero Regina Trabosh (Norristown, Pa.) captained a defensive effort that featured four Griffins in double-digit digs, two others with nine, and a five team blocks. Gelfan also recorded three blocks in the match for a team-high 12 points.
The Griffins continued the final stretch of their 2016 regular-season schedule at Philadelphia University on Thursday, November 10. The Lady Rams, who defeated the Griffins 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-14) less than a week ago, completed the series sweep with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-23) triumph over the Scarlet and Gold. Senior outside hitter Madison McBride (Long Beach, Calif.) and freshman outside hitter Reily Byxbee (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded 11 kills apiece to headline the offense, while Trabosh led four Griffins with double-digit digs. Gelfan offered five kills and a block assist in the loss.
Chestnut Hill College closed the 2016 regular season in grand fashion on Saturday, November 12, battling Goldey-Beacom College in a roller coaster match that saw the Griffins pull away late in the first set, 25-17, only to lose the second set, 25-20. The Scarlet and Gold then decisively won the third set, 25-11, before the Lightning forced a fifth set with their 25-22 victory in the fourth frame. Fortunately, the Griffins were on point in the finale, punishing Goldey-Beacom College 15-2 for the 3-2 (25-17, 20-25, 25-11, 22-25, 15-2) CACC victory. Gelfan again totaled 10 kills and three blocks, this time hitting .292 (10K-3E-24TA) and offering 11.5 points.
Gelfan and the Chestnut Hill College women’s volleyball team compete next in the Opening Round of the CACC Championship Tournament which places them opposite #1N Post University at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15.
