Kuhnen Garners CACC Defensive Player of the Week Award for Play versus University of New Haven

New Haven, Conn. - (11/15/2016) – In excess of her 25 points in the season opener versus the University of New Haven, on Sunday, November 13, Chestnut Hill College senior guard Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y.) offered three steals and a block to garner the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Defensive Player of the Week award. The Scarlet and Gold tipped off the 2016-2017 season with an 82-77 victory over the Chargers; Kuhnen was one of three Griffins in double figures, shooting 11-of-16 (.688) from the field and 1-fo-2 (.500) from the free throw line in addition to six rebounds, three assists, and her noteworthy defense.

As impressive as Kuhnen was versus the University of New Haven (0-1), sophomore guard Mary Trossi (Somerset, N.J.) proved to be the catalyst for the Chestnut Hill College (1-0) offense, scoring 14 points while providing five rebounds and 12 assists in the contest. She scored a layup at 5:42 to give the Griffins an early 9-8 lead in a competitive first quarter. A little more than a minute later (4:36), a Kuhnen layup pushed the Scarlet and Gold lead to four points, 14-10. But the visitors responded, using an 11-1 run to take a 21-15 lead that carried them to a 25-20 first-quarter edge.

The Chargers extended their advantage to 10-point lead, 34-24, early in the second stanza (8:09). This time the Griffins battled back, knotting the contest a 34-34 with a Trossi to Kuhnen three-pointer at 5:12. Still the give-and-take continued as the University of New Haven responded with an 11-3 run that gave them a 45-38 lead heading to the halftime break.

The contest remained tight after halftime as Chestnut Hill College captured a 58-56 advantage on a Kuhnen three-point basket at 3:38. Still, the Chargers controlled a 67-65 lead entering the final 10 minutes of the fray. Chestnut Hill College’s up-tempo style, began to wear down the visitors in the fourth quarter. A Kuhnen layup separated the Griffins for a 77-70 lead with 2:42 remaining in the contest; the seven-point deficit was enough to keep the Chargers at bay in an 82-77 final.

Chestnut Hill College returns to action on Wednesday, November 16, when they open CACC play with a 6:00 p.m. contest with Georgian Court University.
