CACC Weekly Awards Continue for Kohler and Gautier
New Haven, Conn. - (4/19/2017) – Chestnut Hill College impressed in a five-match week with respective wins over the University of the District of Columbia (W, 7-2 on 4/10), Caldwell University (W, 9-0 on 4/11), Philadelphia University (W, 8-1 on 4/13), Millersville University (W, 8-1 on 4/14), and Villanova University (W, 4-3 on 4/15). For their part, sophomore Pierre Kohler (Les Sables d'Olonne, France) and freshman Antoine Gautier (Eysines, France) were respective honored as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player and Rookie of the Week. This is the fifth CACC Weekly Report appearance for Gautier and the sixth for Kohler, who has now garnered four CACC Player of the Week awards (3/13, 3/27, 4/10, 4/17).
The Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis teams fought side by side in our nation's capital on Monday, April 10, afternoon as the Griffins visited the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) for a dual competition. The women fell on the short side of a 5-4 final, in the men's match, senior Jonathan Ducretot (Antibes, France) scored the winning point, 7-2, at number three singles, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, after teaming with sophomore Pierre Kohler (Les Sables d'Olonne, France) for an 8-4 triumph at number one doubles. Sophomore Victor Iove (Tournai, Belgium) and senior Pedro Oranges de Figueredo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won Chestnut Hill College (12-5, 4-0) their first point of the men's match with their 8-5 win at number three doubles. UDC (6-4) evened the match with an 8-2 win at number two doubles, but the Scarlet and Gold ended the stalemate with Kohler and Ducretot's 8-4 win at number one doubles. Kohler made it 3-1 Griffins with his 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, triumph at number one singles and it quickly advanced to 4-1 after a 6-7, 6-0, 6-3, win at number two singles from sophomore Felix Andre (Berlin, Germany). The Firebirds then scored a 6-3, 7-5, win at number four singles to reduce the deficit to 4-2, before Ducretot's deciding point at number three singles, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Caldwell University was next on Chestnut Hill College's CACC schedule as the Cougars visited campus on Tuesday, April 11, for a league match. The Griffins were given a 2-0 head start due to a short Cougar lineup. The match was completed on a 9-0 final in the Scarlet and Gold favor; Iove scored the winning point with his 6-0, 6-0, at number five singles. Following the default at number three doubles, Chestnut Hill College completed the format sweep with consecutive wins at number two, 8-0, and number one, 8-5, doubles. The Griffins' lead quickly progressed to 4-0 with the default at number six singles. Iove's victory was the clincher, 5-0, with succeeding singles wins from Gautier in the fourth, 6-1, 6-0, Ducretot in the third, 6-1, 6-1, Kohler in the first, 6-2, 6-2, and Andre, 6-2, 6-3, in the second.
Chestnut Hill College kept it rolling on Thursday, April 13, at Philadelphia University, where they scored an 8-1 CACC win over the Rams. Ducretot scored the Scarlet and Gold’s winning point with his 6-3, 6-1, victory at number four singles. The Chestnut Hill College doubles points came correspondingly at number one doubles, 8-4, from Kohler and Ducretot, number three doubles, 8-4, from Gautier and Andre and number two doubles, 8-2, from juniors, Pedro Festugato Regalin (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and Lucas Bocaletto (Itatiba, Brazil). Kohler scored the first Chestnut Hill College singles win with his 6-2, 6-1, triumph in the number one flight. Ducretot’s clincher came next, 6-3, 6-1, and Gautier secured the last point at number five singles, 6-4, 6-4.
Millersville University served as the host for Wednesday’s preholiday dual match as the Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis teams visited the Marauders for a pair of afternoon matches. In the men’s match, Chestnut Hill College swept doubles play before winning two of the first three completed singles matches. Iove and Oranges scored the first Scarlet and Gold point with their 8-0 triumph at number three doubles. The next came at two doubles, where Andre and Gautier scored an 8-2 victory. Juniors, Regalin and Bocaletto captured the third Chestnut Hill College point at number one doubles, 8-4. Millersville University's (0-16) only rebuttal was a win by retirement at number three singles as Gautier; 6-2, 6-0 at number singles, and Andre; 6-0, 6-0 at number one singles, delivered the points necessary to clinch. The three remaining singles flights finished in order with Iove winning number four singles, 6-0, 6-0, Regalin winning number five singles, 8-0, and Oranges winning number six singles, 8-1.
For their last dual match of the season, the Chestnut Hill College men's and women's tennis teams visited Villanova University on Saturday, April 15, morning. The meeting severed in a split as the Wildcats won the women's match 7-0 and the Griffins won the men's match 4-3. The Griffins overcame a 1-0 doubles deficit to defeat the Wildcats in the men's match, Ducretot provided the clincher with his dramatic 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, triumph at number four singles. Chestnut Hill College scored first with a 6-2 number three doubles win from Iove and Oranges. Unfortunately, Villanova University (10-9) scored respective wins at number one (6-3) and number two (6-3) to secured the team round, 1-0. A 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), win from Regalin evened the score, 1-1, but the Wildcats were quickly back on top with a 6-0, 6-1, win at number three singles, 2-1. Kohler continued the back-and-forth with his 6-2, 6-4, triumph at number one singles tying the contest at 2-2. Andre (then pushed it to 3-2 Chestnut Hill College with his 6-4, 6-1, number two singles win, only for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, Villanova University win at number five singles to even the contest once again, 3-3. After an opening 6-4 loss, Ducretot made sure the Griffins current win streak extended to seven matches with succeeding 6-3, 6-2, wins.
The Chestnut Hill College women's tennis team finishes the 2016-2017 season at 0-16 overall. Meanwhile, the men finish their regular and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) season schedules on Tuesday, April 18, when they visit the University of the Sciences (USciences) for a 3:00 p.m. match.
