Harnett Hauls in CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition For Win Over Caldwell University
New Haven, Conn. - (5/4/2017) – Enduring the persistent rain, Chestnut Hill College managed to complete both games of their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader versus Caldwell University on Saturday, April 22. Senior Justin Harnett (Aberdeen, N.J.) was the victor (2-2) in the Griffins’ 10-5 game-one win over the Cougars. For his effort he was recognized on the CACC Baseball Weekly Honor Roll. Harnett held the Cougars to an unearned run on five hits and struck out four in seven innings on the hill.
Junior first baseman Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) (4-for-5, 3 runs) and senior third baseman Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) (3-for-4, 1 run, 4 RBI) provided the punch that helped Harnett to this second win of the season. The Chestnut Hill College (18-13-1, 12-6) offense was consistent in the opener, scoring one run in the second inning, 1-0, one run in the third inning, 2-1, four runs in the fifth inning, 6-1, one run in the sixth inning, 7-1, and two more runs in the eighth inning, 10-4. Caldwell University (12-21, 6-12) narrowed final deficit by a run, scoring on a misplayed, two-out grounder to second base, 10-5. The Griffins’ run in the second inning was the product of a two-out DiBona single up the middle, a single through the left side from sophomore designated hitter Zach Szumigala (Fairless Hills, Pa.), a walk to sophomore left fielder Eric Small (Downingtown, Pa.), and an error at third base. Senior right fielder Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa.) singled in the run in the third inning, singles from DiBonaventure and DiBona, and an error delivered the four runs in the fifth inning. In the sixth inning it was a DiBonaventure sacrifice fly, in the seventh inning a sacrifice fly from sophomore center fielder Vincent Case (Southampton, Pa.), and in the eighth inning DiBonaventure struck once more with a two-run double to left.
Chestnut Hill College plays their next CACC contests on Monday, April 24, when they visit Dominican College for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
