Gavin Gains CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition
New Haven, Conn. - (4/16/2018) – Sophomore Adam Gavin (Gothenburg, Sweden) went 6-2 in a 2-2 week for Chestnut Hill College, garnering a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Weekly Honor Roll mention on the league’s latest men’s tennis report. Gavin was perfect in wins over the University of the Sciences (USciences), and West Chester University, before contributing to number three doubles points in losses to Concordia College (NY) and Queens College.
USciences proved no match for Chestnut Hill College (9-7, 2-1) in Monday (April 9) afternoon’s CACC) match as the Griffins shutout USciences (3-7, 0-1) for the league prize, 9-0. Number two doubles was the first pin to fall for the Scarlet and Gold, who won the point with an 8-1 win from freshman Jesus Darias (Bolivar, Venezuela) and sophomore Antoine Gautier (Eysines, France), 1-0. Junior Felix Andre (Berlin, Germany) and Gavin added to the Griffin lead with their matching 8-1 win at number three doubles, 2-0. The Chestnut Hill College doubles sweep was completed with an 8-4 triumph at number one doubles and the Devils were soon retired with ease thanks to Griffin wins at number three (6-0, 6-3) and number six (6-0, 6-1) singles. Gavin helped extend the stretch of Scarlet and Gold victories with his later, 6-2, 6-0, win at number five singles.
The final dual match of the season for the Chestnut Hill College tennis teams brought the Griffins to West Chester University (0-12) on Tuesday (April 10) afternoon. There, the Scarlet and Gold endured a 7-2 loss on the women’s side, but split the twin bill with an 8-1 triumph in the men’s competition. Chestnut Hill College swept the men’s team round and clinched before West Chester University (0-12) could score a point with wins at number two (6-3, 6-1) and number three (6-1, 6-0) singles. Andre and Gavin got the Griffins started with their 8-3 win at number three doubles and were followed by wins of 8-5 and 8-6 at number one and number two doubles, respectively. As play moved to singles, match-winning points followed in the second (6-3, 6-1) and third (6-1, 6-0) individual flights. Gavin’s 6-1, 6-0, win at number five singles increased the Griffin lead to 6-0, before the eventual 8-1 conclusion.
Friday’s Senior Day match featured a clash of CACC titans as Chestnut Hill College hosted Concordia College (NY) (11-4, 2-0) for a league match. Andre and Gavin concluded the doubles round with the Griffins’ first point of the affair coming in the third team flight (8-3). Unfortunately, only Gautier earned an individual victory as the Clippers subdued the Scarlet and Gold celebration in a 7-2 end.
Chestnut Hill College visited Queens College on Sunday, April 15, for another high-level National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) East Region match. There, the Knights used a 2-1 doubles advantage to spur them for the 7-2 victory. Queens College (16-5) won number one, 9-7, and number two, 8-0, doubles, before Chestnut Hill College secured the final point of the round. Thanks to a hard-fought 9-8 (7-5) victory from Andre and Gavin the Griffins cut the deficit in half for singles play. Unfortunately, the triumph did not provide enough momentum to overcome the Knights, who won five of six singles flights.
The Chestnut Hill College men’s tennis team completes their regular season and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedules on Wednesday, April 18, when they visit Jefferson for a 3:00 p.m. match.
