Craig Collects Third CACC Player of the Week Award, Shaffer Complete Game Garners Honor Roll Recognition

New Haven, Conn. - (4/30/2018) – Senior shortstop Alec Craig (Hammonton, N.J.) collected his third Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week title with a .429 (9-for-21) batting average, a .500 on-base percentage, a .810 slugging percentage, and 11 stolen bases (11-for-11, 1.000) that brought him home nine times and knocked in seven of his teammates in a 5-1 week of league play versus Goldey-Beacom College, the University of the Sciences (USciences), and Bloomfield College. Freshman Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, Pa.) joined Craig on the league report, earning a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll with a complete game victory in a 4-1, game-one final over the Bears.

A disastrous fifth inning gave Goldey-Beacom College (16-25-1, 14-13) the decision, 5-1, in game one on Tuesday, April 24, but Chestnut Hill College (21-19, 17-13) got revenge in the nightcap, scoring consistently in an 11-4 triumph. Craig was the only Griffin with multiple hits (2-for-4) in game one and he stole a base as well (1-for-1, 1.000) before engineering four runs in game two with a first-inning ground out to second base, two walks, and two more stolen bases (2-for-2, 1.000).

Providing plenty of run support for solid pitching performances from junior Matthew Kress (Lansdale, Pa.) and senior Patrick Kelley (Pipersville, Pa.), Chestnut Hill College swept USciences in Friday’s (April 27) CACC doubleheader with one-sided finals of 14-4 and 14-5. Freshman right fielder Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) led a group of seven Griffins who recorded two hits in the opener, while senior first baseman Matthew Owens (Cherry Hill, N.J.) tied the Scarlet and Gold’s single-season home run mark with his sixth four-bagger of the season scoring two runs the sixth inning of game two. Craig was 4-for-8 (.500) in the twin bill, recording two runs, two runs-batter-in (RBI), and a walk in both games. He paired it with five stolen bases (5-for-5, 1.000) in the opener and one in the nightcap (1-for-1, 1.000).

A pair of complete game performances from Shaffer and senior Andrew Sibson (Galloway, N.J.) highlighted Saturday’s (April 28) CACC doubleheader versus Bloomfield College as the Griffins extended their current winning streak to five games, reached 20 wins for the fifth time in six seasons, and secured CACC postseason play for the eighth time in nine seasons with 4-1 and 8-3 Senior Day victories over the Bears. Craig went 3-for-7 (.429) with three runs, two RBI, a walk and two stolen bases (2-for-2, 1.000). Most of that came in game two, where he connected for a sacrifice fly in the third inning, 3-2, and a run-scoring triple in the eighth inning, 8-3.

The Chestnut Hill College baseball team continues their CACC schedule on Tuesday, May 1, when the visit Post University for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader.
