Covic and Vassalluzzo Lure CACC Weekly Honor Roll Accolades
New Haven, Conn. - (10/9/2018) – Both junior Mia Covic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and freshman Gianna Vassalluzzo (Newtown, Pa.) both went 4-2 in a 2-1 week that included league wins over Caldwell University (W, 7-0 on October 2) and Holy Family University (W, 7-0 on October 6) to garner mention on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Tennis Weekly Honor Roll.
Chestnut Hill College (2-3, 2-3) got in the win column on Tuesday, October 2, as they overpowered CACC rival, Caldwell University by a 7-0 measure. The Griffins handled the Cougars in doubles play, sweeping the round for the first point of the match. Their success continued in singles play, where - in the process of completing the shutout – they barely allowed the home team a set-point. Vassalluzzo and sophomore Mariana Sanchez (Trenton, N.J.) led off the Chestnut Hill College success with their 6-2 win at number three doubles, while Covic and fellow junior Barbara Broville (Toulouse, France) completed the Scarlet and Gold’s doubles sweep with a 6-2 number one doubles win. In singles, Covic added the third Chestnut Hill College point with her 6-0, 6-0, win at number one singles, while Vassalluzzo was one of three Griffins to score an individual 8-0 win at the end of the singles round.
Shortened by rain, Thursday, October 4, afternoon's match at Goldey-Beacom College unfortunately finished in the home team's favor as the Lightning defeated the Griffins in each completed flight of a 6-0 end. Covic and Broville put up a fight for number one doubles, eventually falling to their counterparts 7-6 (7-2). Individually, Chestnut Hill College had their most success in the middle flights, but came away empty handed against the reigning CACC Champions.
Chestnut Hill College welcomed Holy Family University (1-5, 1-3) to campus for Saturday, October 6, afternoon’s CACC match, where the Griffins quickly disposed of their Tigers counterparts in a 7-0 shutout. The Scarlet and Gold, ended the doubles round in a little more than a half an hour, collecting the first point of the match with chronological wins in the third (6-1), first (6-0), and second (6-1) flights. As individuals, the Griffins continued their success with decisive wins in each singles match; senior Julia Bellon (Indaiatuba, Brazil) provided the clincher with her 6-0, 6-0, victory in the third flight. Vassalluzzo and junior Nicole Yang (Blue Bell, Pa.) provided Chestnut Hill College with their first win of the afternoon, claiming a 6-1 win at number three doubles. A following 6-0 number one doubles win from Covic and Broville ensured the team point for the Griffins, who completed the sweep of the round with a 6-1 second flight win. In singles play, Broville was first to earn a point with her 6-0, 6-0, win in the third flight (2-0). The next Scarlet and Gold point came at number five singles, where Vassalluzzo offered the second of four 6-0, 6-0, triumphs (3-0). Covic won number one singles 6-1, 6-2, for the sixth of the Griffins’ seven points.
