Del Vecchio Draws ECC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition From Griffin Win at Wildcat DII/DIII Invitational
West Babylon, N.Y. – (12/6/2018) – Sophomore Christina Del Vecchio (Warrington, Pa.) led Chestnut Hill College to a first place finish (1st of 12, 9W-4L, 4,127-4,362, 8489 pins) at last weekend’s Wildcat Division II/Division III Invitational to be named to the East Coast Conference Women’s Bowling Weekly Honor Roll. Del Vecchio ranked seventh (7th, 185.3 pins/game) on the individual leaderboard and provided a couple of clutch 10th frame performances in Griffin baker wins.
Chestnut Hill College (23-12) traveled to the Bowlerama in New Castle, Delaware, on Friday, November 30, for the first day of Wilmington University's Wildcat Division II/Division III Invitational. There, the Griffins opened with a 913-745 win over St. Vincent College. In the second match, Del Vecchio filled 9 of 10 frames to lead the Scarlet and Gold in an 876-785 loss to Molloy College. Kutztown University defeated the Griffins, 784-777, in the third match. The Griffins lost another close match to Bloomfield in the fourth set, 822-809, but in the fifth game Chestnut Hill College got back in the win column with an 843-815 win against LIU Post University. The Scarlet and Gold finished the day eighth in the 12-team standings (8th of 12 teams) with 4,127 total pins. Del Vecchio led the team in filled frames (76.0%) and single-pin percentage (100.0%, 13-of-13).
The Griffins began the second day, Saturday, December 1, by defeating their hosts, 869-737. In game two, the Griffins suffered a tough loss to Adelphi University as they battled back from a 60-pin deficit in the eighth frame, only to fall just short of the Panthers in a 935-929 end. Del Vecchio led the team with a 222, while Senior Rebeccah Edelman (Oakford, Pa.) offered a 203 to the Griffin effort. The Scarlet and Gold then faced Medaille College and won the match by slightest margin possible, 859-858. Sophomore Lauren Klein (Horsham, Pa.) led the team with a 197. Del Vecchio added a 188. In game four, sophomore Kristina Scimone (Gibbsboro, N.J.) led Chestnut Hill College to an 829-723 win over New Jersey City University (NJCU) with a 193 game. The final match of the day placed the Griffins opposite the current tournament leader, Caldwell University. The Griffins pulled out the win, 876-791 thanks to a 190 game from Edelman. At the end of the day, Del Vecchio remained Chestnut Hill College’s top performer with a team-high 185.6 pin average.
The fourth-ranked Griffins (4th of 12, 4,127-4,362; 8489 pins), climbed the bracket ladder to win the Wildcat DII/DIII Invitational with victories over Molloy College (W, 161-158), Adelphi University (W, 179-160), and Caldwell University (W, 194-166). Chestnut Hill College faced Molloy College in the first match of the bracket round. The Griffins lost the first game, 186-163, but managed to reel off four consecutive wins for the victory. Adelphi University was the Scarlet and Gold's next opponent. Chestnut Hill College initially took a 3-1 lead, but the Panthers bounced back to force a seventh game. Fortunately, the Griffins regained their focus and won the last game, 179-160, to earn a championship appearance versus Caldwell University. In the championship match, the Cougars took an early 2-0 lead over the Griffins, but a spirited Scarlet and Gold performance won the next three games. Unfortunately, Caldwell University forced a seventh game with a 200-184 game-six victory. In the final game, Chestnut Hill College put together their best game of the set defeating the Cougars, 194-166, and taking the invitational title. Wireman filled 12-of-14 frames to lead the way. The weekend's final victory over the Cougars also marked the 100th win in the program's three-year history.
Chestnut Hill College returns to the lanes after the New Year as they are scheduled to compete next on Friday, January 18, when they travel to Limerick Bowl for the Kutztown University Invitational.
