Double-Double Draws CACC Weekly Honor Roll Recognition for Thompson
New Haven, Conn. – (12/17/2018) – After trailing Assumption College by 10 points at the end of the first half, 35-25, a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) from senior guard Dexter Thompson (Providence, R.I.) headlined a Chestnut Hill College resurgence that reversed fortunes, 59-56, midway through the second half of Saturday’s (December 15) contest. The double-double performance – the first of his collegiate career – also earned Thompson his first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll recognition.
The early action settled with Chestnut Hill College (3-6) and Assumption College (4-6) even in an 11-11 (13:54) deadlock. The Greyhounds broke the tie, 13-11 (12:59), with a pair of free throws and built a 10-point, 35-25, halftime lead despite eight points from freshman guard Trevonn Pitts (Wyncote, Pa.). In the first three minutes of the second half, Thompson scored five of the Griffins seven points that cut the deficit to five points, 37-32, by 17:06. Both teams battled back-and-forth until a Pitts bucket (45-40, 12:12), ignited Chestnut Hill College for a crucial 10-point run that landed them a 48-45 lead with 8:39 remaining. Unfortunately, the Greyhounds regained advantage, 56-54, with 2:34 left in the game, but with ice water in his veins, senior guard Liban Awl (Manassas, Va.) knocked down a three pointer to put the home team back in the lead, 57-56 (1:41). From there, a hustle rebound from Thompson with 24 seconds (0:24) left earned him a trip to the line, where he sunk both freebies to ensure the Scarlet and Gold win, 59-56.
Thompson hit 5-of-11 (.454) from the field and 3-of-6 (.500) from the free throw line. He recorded six of his 10 rebounds in the first half and chipped in two assists and two steals as well.
