Adler Attracts CACC Rookie of the Week Award

New Haven, Conn. – (3/11/2019) – Freshman Kai Adler (Leer, Germany) was 4-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles during the Griffins’ recent trip to the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Center to warrant the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Tennis Rookie of the Week award. He was a part of two of the Griffins’ victories in a 6-1 triumph over Christian Brothers University, contributing to a 7-6 (2) win at number two doubles and the match-winner at number five singles, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.

Chestnut Hill College (6-2) battled from behind in doubles play and won five out of six singles matches to defeat Christian Brothers University (7-5) by a 6-1 measure. The Buccaneers earned the first win of the afternoon with a 6-3 end at number one doubles, but the Griffins answered with 7-6 wins in both the second and third flights. Adler and junior Adam Gavin (Gothenburg, Sweden) won the deciding point in the third flight first with a 7-2 score, then Junior Antoine Gautier (Bordeaux, France) and sophomore Jesus Darias (Bolivar, Venezuela) triumphed at number two doubles with a 7-4 mark. In individual play, Darias quickly gave the Griffins a 2-0 edge with his 6-0, 6-4, win at number two singles. The Buccaneers issued their only answer in the third singles match with a 6-3, 6-1, victory (2-1) because afterwards Chestnut Hill College clinched consecutive points at number four (7-6 (6), 6-1) and number five (6-4, 2-6, 10-5) singles, 4-1. Gavin and freshman Tom Pitchley (London, England) closed the match with respective wins at number six (6-4, 6-3) and number one (6-7 (0), 7-5, 12-10) singles.

Chestnut Hill College continued their stay at the USTA National Center with a Tuesday, March 5, afternoon match versus the University of St. Francis (Ill.). The Griffins swept doubles play and the first five singles matches to earn their second straight 6-1 victory of the spring. Junior Erik Jorsal (Mudgeeraba, Australia) provided the Scarlet and Gold’s clinching point with his 6-4, 6-2, victory at number four singles. Adler was part of both a 6-3 win at number three doubles and his own, 6-2, 6-0, victory at number five singles. Soon after, respective wins from freshman Thibault Gasser (Anglet, France), Gautier, and Jorsal at number six (6-2, 6-0), number three (6-2, 6-0), and number four (6-4, 6-2) singles ensured the Chestnut Hill College win.

The Scarlet and Gold endured their first loss of the spring trip in a Wednesday, March 6, match with Grand Valley State University (GVSU). The Lakers won by a 5-2 measure after stealing the team point with consecutive wins in the second (6-4) and third (7-6 (8-6)) flights and winning four of the first five completed singles matches. A highly-competitive match closed the affair as Adler battled to a 6-4, 6-7 (11-13), 10-5, triumph at number six singles, 5-2.

Chestnut Hill College concluded their stay at the USTA National Center on a high note as they defeated John Carroll University by a 7-0 in Thursday’s competition. It was the Griffins’ third win of the trip and it came with three consecutive 6-2 doubles wins and an impressive sweep of singles play. Gavin and Adler were the first of three, 6-2, doubles wins for the Scarlet and Gold. The Griffins’ remaining two wins followed in reverse order, 1-0. Adler scored Chestnut Hill College’s second singles point with his 6-1, 6-1, win at number five singles.
