Gilham Gets Hot, Attracts CACC Baseball Weekly Honor Roll Appearance
New Haven, Conn. – (3/18/2019) – Senior catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) broke out of an early-season slump with a 9-for-16 (.563) effort during Chestnut Hill College’s recent 4-1 stretch versus Mansfield University and Lincoln University to earn a mention on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Weekly Honor Roll. Gilham’s week concluded with a 6-for-6 performance in a doubleheader against the Lions; he knocked in five runs during the Griffins’ 18-4 game-two victory with singles in the fourth and sixth innings and a two-run homer run – his first of the season – in the fifth inning. Gilham finished the week with a .563/.632/.875 (AVG/OBP/SLG) slash line that produced eight runs and five runs-batter-in (RBI).
Chestnut Hill College welcomed Mansfield University to Latshaw-McCarthy Field for Friday's home opener. The Mountaineers scored a run in both the second and third innings, while leaning on the pitching of Evan McAndrew (2-1, 7.0IP, 4H, 1R, 1BB, 8K) and Bryce Zaparzynski (2IP, 2H, SV) in a 3-1 victory over the Griffins. Freshman second baseman Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.) singled home a Scarlet and Gold run in the fifth inning, but senior left fielder Franklin Ramirez (Reading, Pa.) (2-for-4) was the only Griffin with multiple hits. Sophomore Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) (0-3) pitched will in defeat, allowing an earned run on four hits, while striking out four. Gilham was 0-for-3 in the loss.
A four-run third inning in game one was the changing point in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader with Mansfield University as Chestnut Hill College used the rally to defeat the Mountaineers by a 5-3 score in the opener and sweep the twin bill with a 10-3 victory in the nightcap. Sophomore Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.) played a significant role in both contests, knocking in two game-one runs with a third-inning single up the middle and pitching six strong innings for a win in game two. Gilham was 3-for-3 in game one; doubling in the second inning and singling in both the third and fifth innings. He scored in the second inning, moving to third base on a single from sophomore centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) and coming home on a Ramirez sacrifice fly. Gilham was 0-for-4 in game two, but scored during the Griffins’ seven-run first inning.
Saturday’s success versus Mansfield University primed Chestnut Hill College for Sunday’s action at Lincoln University, where the Griffins connected often in back-to-back wins of 22-4 and 18-4 with the second game was concluding in six innings due to darkness. Gilham continued his hot hitting with a 6-for-6 effort that included his first home run of the season in a 4-for-4 game two. Sophomore Justin Anderosky (Warrington, Pa.) (1-0) and senior Dino Cattai (Philadelphia, Pa.) (1-2) both won their first games of the season; the former was the in relief and the first of a career.
