Steger and Richardson Receive CACC Recognition
New Haven, CT – (10/11/2011) – For helping Chestnut Hill College to a dramatic overtime defeat of Mercy College on Wednesday, October 5, freshman forward
Pat Steger (La Plata, MD) and junior
Darryl Richardson Jr. (Turnersville, NJ) were recognized among their week’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) award winners. Steger, who netted the game-winning-goal against the Mavericks, earned the CACC Rookie of the Week award while Richardson was an honorable mention for the CACC Player of the Week award.
Despite holding a 22-12 shot advantage, Mercy College trailed through a majority of the affair. Senior forward
Gavin Reid (Dundee, Scotland) struck first for Chestnut Hill College (5-7-1, 3-4), redirecting a cross from Richardson at 14:12. In the second half, Richardson chased down a lob from sophomore defenseman
Darius Gbunblee (Philadelphia, PA), and put the home team back up 2-1 with a drive past the Maverick keeper. At the start of overtime, the Griffins were the aggressor and after one unsuccessful assault, a second attack from Steger yielded a rebound goal and brought victory, 3-2.
Richardson is tied for the team lead in assists (3), while ranking second on the team in goals (3) and points (9). Ranking second on the team in shots (21), Steger has been aggressive all season. He is the second Griffin rookie to contribute a point.
The men’s soccer team resumes their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with a visit to Concordia College (NY) on Saturday, October 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
