Hot Series Versus Rams and Warriors Earn Uzzell First CACC Player of the Week Award

New Haven, Conn. – (4/16/2019) – Junior third baseman Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa.) produced 10 runs and batted in 11 more with a .615 (16-for-26)/.630/.885 slash line that helped Chestnut Hill College to a 4-2 week of league play versus Jefferson and Nyack College. As a result, Uzzell was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Player of the Week for the first time in his collegiate career. While manning the hot corner, Uzzell played a major role in the leadoff spot, as he went 4-for-9 with a walk, three stolen bases (3-for-3, 1.000), four runs, and three runs-batted-in (RBI) in the Griffins’ first split with the Rams (April 9). Three days later, on Friday, April 12, the Scarlet and Gold split another doubleheader with the Rams at Latshaw-McCarthy Field; Uzzell was 4-for-7 with a stolen base (1-for-1, 1.000), two runs, and two RBI. The week ended with a sweep of Nyack College on Saturday, April 13. Powering the Griffins to wins of 18-7 and 9-5, Uzzell was 8-for-10 with four runs and six RBI; he totaled four doubles in the twin bill, bringing his season total to a team-high 17.

Offense ruled Tuesday’s (April 9) doubleheader at Jefferson (14-25, 12-12) as Chestnut Hill College (20-18, 15-9) won the first game of the CACC twin bill by a 15-11 measure, but surrendered game two to the Rams by an 11-7 final. Senior catcher Eric Gilham (Deptford, N.J.) powered the Griffins to the game one win, going 4-for-5 with four runs and three RBI thanks to a double and a pair of home runs. Sophomore Billy Bethel (Yardley, Pa.) benefitted with the win (5-3), despite allowing eight runs on 11 hits and two walks. He struck out four. Sophomore centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) and freshman second baseman Luke LeBeau (Pittsfield, Mass.) knocked in two runs apiece in the nightcap.

Chestnut Hill College then split two CACC games with Jefferson on Friday, April 12.  Chestnut Hill College took game one, scoring big in the first (3 runs) and fourth (4) innings en route to a 10-7 victory over the Rams. Unfortunately, Jefferson flipped the script in game two, scoring a run in both the second (1 run) and third inning (1) while junior Jack Galligan (New City, N.Y.) outdueled sophomore Will Shaffer (Sicklerville, N.J.) in a 2-0 final.

The following day, on Saturday, April 13, Chestnut Hill College won both games of a CACC doubleheader with Nyack College. In game one, the Griffins brought the heat putting up crooked numbers in the second (4 runs), sixth (5), and eighth (3) innings to claim an 18-7 victory. The Scarlet and Gold enjoyed another big inning in their second at-bat of game two, where back-to-back doubles from Uzzell and sophomore shortstop Jared Healey (Philadelphia, Pa.) and a single from sophomore centerfielder John Contoudis (Jenkintown, Pa.) knocked in five runs and gave the Griffins an early 6-0 edge. Chestnut Hill College used the advantage to their benefit as they preserved against five late Warrior runs for a 9-5 league victory.
