Philadelphia PA – (9/1/2009) – Chestnut Hill College capitalized on a penalty kick to force overtime in this afternoon's home opening contest against Washington Adventist University (WAU). Unfortunately, the Pioneers stole a 3-2 win with an overtime goal at 104:36. A result of physical and aggressive play, junior defenseman Maurice Blanton (Bristol, PA ) netted the tying strike on a penalty kick with 6:55 remaining; the Pioneers' Victor Acquino ended the affair in the extra period with a strong shot from center pitch off the feed from Se-eun Park.
Chestnut Hill College (0-1) and WAU (2-0) exhausted each other on a hot afternoon, and they expired the opening half in a scoreless stalemate. Park's individual effort forced two turnovers in the Griffins' defensive end allowing the Pioneers to take a 2-1 lead after an opening tally from sophomore forward Billy Shulski (Galloway, NJ ). Shulski put a hard shot on goal, which ricocheted off a defender and the Pioneer goalie before trickling into the net at 47:51. Park's aggressive play frustrated the Griffin's defense and then brought the Pioneers into the lead at 80:59. Tempers ran high on both sides and in conclusion of some messy play, six yellow cards were issued and Blanton was awarded the penalty kick. The Griffins topped the Pioneers in shots, 26-20, and corner kicks, 9-5, but WAU managed to escape with a 3-2 overtime victory this afternoon.
Freshman goalkeeper Michael Goldstein (Pennsauken, NJ ) started for the Griffins and made two saves to help Chestnut Hill College to a 0-0 halftime tie with the Pioneers. WAU's Jonathan Uribe matched Goldstein through opening frame and out lasted junior P.J Tucker (Woodstown, NJ ) in overtime while totaling six saves. Tucker made four saves, but took the loss this afternoon.
The men's soccer team will host the New York Institute of Technology in a 7:00 p.m. contest at the Plymouth Whitemarsh High School Football Stadium on Wednesday, September 9.
