Griffins and Lady Rams Open CACC Play With Intense Competition

9/2/2009 3:28:32 PM

Philadelphia, PA – (9/2/2009) – Chestnut Hill College held Philadelphia University in a scoreless tie through the opening 56 minutes of this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. The conference opponents took turn denying each other scoring opportunities in the midfield, but the Lady Rams were first to break through as freshman forward Trisha Sileo (Islip, N.Y.) footed a strike into the Griffin goal in the second half. Philadelphia University held on to their advantage over the final 34 minutes and recorded a 1-0 conference victory.

Despite an 11-2 shot advantage in the opening half, Philadelphia University (2-1, 1-0) was unable to discourage Chestnut Hill College (1-2, 0-1). The Griffin defense prevented the Lady Rams from getting off quality shots, allowing a persistent offense time to challenge Philadelphia University in the midfield. Senior forward Julie Treen (Upper Township, NJ ) and sophomore defender Kaitlyn Laufer (Merchantville, NJ ) got off two shots late in the period, but the Griffins came away fruitless and entered the break in a 0-0 tie with the Lady Rams.

11 minutes into the second half the stalemate was broken, as freshman midfielder Melissa Copeland (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) headed a ball toward goal. It found the foot of Sileo, who had no problem putting it to the left side of the goal giving the Lady Rams a 1-0 lead. The Griffins looked to force the issue as time wore on, but they were unsuccessful on three second-half attempts. Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Della Peruta (Haddon Heights, N.J.) earned the win taking over for starting keeper, freshman Kelli Kowalewski (Shamong, N.J.) in the second half. For the Griffins, freshman goalkeeper Jessica Veazey (Middletown, DE ) made ten saves in the loss.

The women's soccer team heads to Molloy College on Monday, September 7, for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
