Wildcats Use First Half Scores to Hold off Griffins

9/22/2009 4:12:10 PM

Philadelphia, PA – (9/22/2009) – Chestnut Hill College allowed Wilmington University a two-goal advantage in the opening half, and it was all the Wildcats would need to capture a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win this afternoon. The Wildcats held possession for a majority of the contest and out-shot the Griffins 26-7. The Griffins had a late chance to spark a rally, but the Wildcat defense foiled any plans of a comeback as they closed out the contest 2-0.

Trailing 2-0 late in the second half, Chestnut Hill College (1-5-1, 0-3-1) aimed to rally. One of their best scoring opportunities came with under three minutes remaining, when a throw from junior defenseman Maurice Blanton (Bristol, PA ) found the head of freshman forward Carl Essenthier (Philadelphia, PA ); however the Essenthier header sailed high. The Wildcats suppress the Griffins for the remaining clock to seal the victory.

Wilmington University (7-2, 2-0) obtained their first goal on a pin-point pass from junior midfielder Anthony Randazzo (Bridgeton, N.J.). Randazzo served a lob from midfield that met senior forward Sargbah Tarpeh (Philadelphia, Pa.) on a sprint to the Griffin net, one touch sent it past junior goalkeeper P.J Tucker (Woodstown, NJ ) for the 1-0 advantage (16:04). Seven minutes later (23:53) the Wildcats struck again as Tarpeh located junior forward Jorge Zapata (Caracas, Venezuela) for a score midway through the opening period.

Wildcat junior goalkeeper Duhan Malali (Galloway, N.J.) made two saves and earned the win. Tucker made eight saves in the losing effort.

The men's soccer team will head to Concordia College for a 2:30 p.m. CACC contest on Saturday, September 26.
