Lafayette Hill, PA – (10/25/2010) – Bloomsburg University scored on their first, two shots to account for the difference in this evening's contest, as the Huskies defeated Chestnut Hill College 2-0 at Victory Field #1. Following the initial Husky goals play evened out, but the Griffins could not capitalize on their chances. During opening announcements, the men's soccer program recognized their senior class and former teammate Michael Wood, who was injured in a car accident earlier this fall.
Bloomfield College (5-8-2) controlled the early action and following a scramble in front of the Chestnut Hill College (9-8) goal sophomore forward Bryce Shaffer (Gettysburg, PA) scored the Huskies first goal at the 6-minute mark (6:00). Shaffer struck again at 12:39, finishing a serve from freshman defender Michael Del Sordi (Scotch Plains, NJ) at the Griffin right post. Down 2-0, the Griffins finally began to balance the tempo and despite trailing the Huskies they would eventually hold a 7-5 shot advantage at halftime.
The Griffins chances were limited in the second half, as the Huskies used their advantage to control play with a 10-4 shooting edge. Freshman goalkeeper Bernie Roell (Douglassville, PA) collected the win (5-8-2) and made all three of his saves in the first half; with a Husky defenseman accounting for the team's four save. Sophomore forward Carl Essenthier (Philadelphia, PA) led the Griffin offense with four shots while sophomore goalkeeper Michael Goldstein (Pennsauken, NJ) made five saves in the loss (9-8).
During the evening's opening announcements, the Griffins recognized their senior class which included; defenseman Maurice Blanton (Bristol, PA), midfielder Julian Fernandez (Galloway, NJ), defenseman Kyle Thornley (East Windsor, NJ), and forward Yannick Wallace (Bowie, MD). Additionally, the Griffins honored Michael Wood (Lancaster, PA), a former teammate who in his recovery has served as an inspiration to team this season. Wood's family was presented with flowers, a team autographed soccer ball, and Michael's #2 jersey.
The men's soccer team finishes their regular season schedule with their last Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest; a 3:30 p.m. contest at Philadelphia University on Wednesday, October 27.
