West Chester, PA – (9/2/2010) – In this afternoon's season opener, West Chester University rode back-to-back, second-half scores to a 2-0 win over Chestnut Hill College. Senior forward Sarah Oswald (MaCungie, PA) scored twice within a three-minute span to push the Golden Rams past a resilient Griffin defense.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Veazey (Middletown, DE) and the Chestnut Hill College (0-1) defense continuously denied the Golden Rams, as West Chester University (1-0) opened on the offensive. The Golden Rams out-shot the Griffins 6-0 in the opening half and at 51:16 the assault finally broke defenses; senior forward Devon Swaim (Levittown, PA) located Oswald for her first tally of the affair. The same duo hooked up at 54:08 to put the Griffins behind a deflating 2-0 deficit. Oswald led the Golden Rams with five shots and freshman goalkeeper Leeny Tarnowski (Bethlehem, PA) made one save to earn the shutout (1-0).
Freshman forward Kaelyn Pizarro (Berlin, N.J.) recorded the lone Griffin strike, 5:31 into the second half. The Chestnut Hill College momentum was short-lived, as the Golden Ram goals followed less than four minutes later. Veazey totaled eight saves in the loss (0-1).
The women's soccer team returns to host their home opener on Saturday, September 4, when they welcome Millersville University to Victory Field #1 for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
