New Castle, DE – (9/21/2010) – The scoring came early this afternoon's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest, but Wilmington University came away with the upper hand before defeating Chestnut Hill College, 2-1. Senior defenseman Maurice Blanton (Bristol, PA) scored yet another penalty kick to tie the contest at 12:49, but the Wildcats recovered and notched the winning tally just seven minutes later (19:44).
Wilmington University (3-5, 3-1) controlled their home pitch from the opening whistle, as they owned a 12-5 corner kick advantage and out-shot Chestnut Hill College (5-2, 3-1) 17-3. At 6:53, the Wildcats capitalized on one of their corner kick opportunities when senior midfielder Danny Nguyen (Ontario, Canada) scored the restart from fellow senior midfielder, Joe Stant (Dover, DE), 1-0. Blanton converted the penalty kick six minutes later (12:49), knotting the contest at 1-1, but a pass from junior midfielder David Cash (Baltimore, MD) found freshman defenseman Manny Payton (Eastampton, NJ) for the deciding score at 19:44. Junior goalkeeper Duhan Malali (Galloway, NJ) made one save in the Wildcats win (3-5).
Sophomore forward Carl Essenthier (Philadelphia, PA) and junior forward Gavin Reid (Dundee, Scotland) recorded the other two Griffin shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Goldstein (Pennsauken, NJ) made six saves in the losing effort (5-2).
The men's soccer team returns home to host Post University in a 3:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, September 25. The CACC contest is part of a featured soccer doubleheader, as Chestnut Hill College celebrates Family Weekend.
