DiGiovanni Delivers Twice As Griffins Soar Over Lady Eagles

Lock Haven, PA – (9/4/2011) – Sophomore Carly DiGiovanni (Seaville, NJ) made both of her shots count at Lock Haven University this afternoon, as the Chestnut Hill College midfielder scored two second-half goals to carry the Griffins over the Lady Eagles, 3-1. The Griffins owned a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to senior forward Lauren Riiff (Clementon, NJ) and DiGiovanni did the rest in the second half; deflecting in the eventual game-winner and scoring an insurance penalty kick.
 
Riiff delivered a crucial goal on a run down the right side, 1-0, to give Chestnut Hill College (1-2) early advantage in what was evenly-played contest. Lock Haven University (0-1) held a slight 12-11 shot advantage, but they were unable to keep up with the Griffins pace once they fell behind. The Griffins added to their advantage early in the second half with DiGiovanni's first goal coming off a deflected a cross from sophomore midfielder Steph Litty (Marlton, NJ) at 50:03. The Lady Eagles made one last push and were able to close the gap to 2-1 when freshman defense Danielle Mauro (Toms River, NJ) scored a loose ball at 57:46, but the spark was extinguished less than ten minutes later (67:13) with DiGiovanni beating senior goalkeeper Hayley Zinn (Wyomissing, PA) on a penalty kick opportunity. Zinn made three saves in the loss for Lock Haven University, while junior goalkeeper Jessica Veazey (Middletown, DE) totaled six saves and earned her first win of the season for the Griffins.
 
The women's soccer team returns home to host Bloomsburg University in a 4:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, September 7.
