10/8/2014 7:21:00 PM

Box Score Boyds, Md. – (10/8/2014) – On the comforts of their home field, the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) controlled the tempo of this afternoon's contest as they used a 19-5 shot advantage and a 4-2 corner-kick edge to defeat Chestnut Hill College by a 2-0 final. The Firebirds scored on the second of consecutive corner kicks to take a first-half lead at 15:41 and added an insurance tally early in the second half on a direct-kick strike from sophomore midfielder Nenad Smiljanic (Barnsley, England).

UDC (6-4-1) fired the affair's first shots and after a strike by Chestnut Hill College (4-6-1) junior midfielder Matthew Casaletto (Sewell, N.J.), they were on the offensive once again. At 15:36, the Firebirds took the first of two consecutive corner kicks. It was denied, but the second, which came only five seconds later, found the foot of sophomore defenseman Patrick Borchert (Hagen, Germany) at 15:41, 1-0. The Firebirds looked to add to their lead for the remainder of the first half, but with save after save sophomore goalkeeper James Jackson (Sewell, N.J.) kept the contest a one-goal game. After the break, the Firebirds resumed their assault as they took two shots before Smiljanic buried a 20-yard direct kick into the back of the Griffin net just before the 52nd-minute mark (51:59). Left to play catch-up, the Griffins had chances to break the Firebird defense in the 67th minute and 83rd minute, but none of their attempts came to fruition.

Smiljanic recorded three points, providing one of the assists on Borchert's opening tally. Borchert led the Firebirds in shots with four, while junior goalkeeper Louis Connor (Birmingham, England) recorded one save in the win (6-4-1).

Casaletto took two of the Griffins five shots with senior midfielder Michael Hester (Seaford, N.Y.), sophomore defenseman Nil Fussen (Aachen, Germany), and freshman defenseman Joseph McGuigan (Philadelphia, Pa.) providing the others. Jackson recorded seven saves in the loss (4-5-1).

The men's soccer team returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Saturday, October 11, when they welcome Concordia College (NY) for a 3:00 p.m. contest on the Chestnut Hill College Campus Field.
