Lions Provide Too Much Pressure for Pauls and Griffins; Take CACC Opener by 2-0 Margin

9/10/2014 6:11:00 PM

Box Score Lakewood, N.J. - (9/10/2014) – Senior goalkeeper Samantha Pauls (South Plainfield, N.J.) made 11 saves on 13 of the Georgian Court University shots that reached the Chestnut Hill College goal, but it would not be enough for the Griffins to stop the Lions, who won today's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest by a 2-0 final. The Griffins totaled four shots in all with senior midfielder Morgan Fell (Boyertown, Pa.), junior midfielder Danielle Spinuzza (Williamstown, N.J.), junior defender Christina Mangeri (Muttontown, N.Y.), and freshman forward Morgan Ruth (Blackwood, N.J.) each accounting for one of the strikes.

Georgian Court University (2-0, 1-0) wasted no time pressuring Pauls and the Chestnut Hill College (0-2, 0-1) defense as they peppered the Griffins goal with two strikes in the opening three minutes (3:01). After the initial assault, the Griffins managed to keep the Lions at bay until the next series of strikes came just before the 11-minute mark (10:52). The Griffins would escape that round of attempts and a few others, but eventually their luck would run out as sophomore defender Jessica Constantine (Lakehurst, N.J.) located sophomore Tuere Chisholm-Thomas (South Orange, N.J.) for a boot to the upper right corner and the initial 1-0 lead at 39:57.

The Lions second tally would come just 3:13 (48:13) into the closing half as freshman Rosa Franze delivered a successful strike off a corner-kick scramble, 2-0. Spinuzza and Ruth would each have a shot later in the half, but the Griffins came away empty handed in the final 48 minutes to surrender the CACC win.

Franze led the Lions with five shots, but she had plenty of help as the home side totaled 23 shots over the 90-minute fray. Junior goalkeeper Casey O'Connor (Toms River, N.J.) made one save in the shutout victory (2-0)

The women's soccer team returns to campus to continue their CACC schedule with a 1:00 p.m. home opener against Post University on Saturday, September 13.
